Player Spotlight: Harold Bernard

Harold Bernard was a jack-of-all-trades for Chandler HS (Chandler, AZ) last year. Here is a Q & A Scout.com did with the talented athlete.

Scout.com: What were your stats/honors from last season?
Harold Bernard: "2006 STATS: Rushing- 32 carries for 379 yards; 4 TDs. Receiving- 7 catches for 89 yards. Tackles- 55 (29 solo; 26 assists), sacks- 1, INTs- 2. Special Teams- 7 returns for 320 yards and 2 TDs. 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. Named 1st Team All East Valley Tribune Return Specialist, 2nd Team All-Region Return Specialist and ‘06 Specials Team player of the year (team)."

What is your official height and weight?
"Height: 6-1 Weight: 178 lbs."

What is your greatest football memory?
"Winning the championship my first year ever of playing football."

What are your goals for the upcoming season?
"To do better than I did last year and be one of the top players in the state."

How are you preparing for the upcoming season? Will you attend any camps this summer?
"I have been been in the weight room and been running track to keep my speed up, I plan on attending a coaches convention in Hawaii and either the Stanford Nike camp of the USC one."

What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve?
"My conditioning because there is a more than likely chance that I will be playing both ways next year so I want to be ready."

Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?
"Dion Jordan of course, Steven Jackson, Marc Anthony and Archie Woulard."

Name one teammate you really respect and why?
"Lineman Alex Ardnt, because he was diagnosed with leukemia last season and is still fighting through it and that takes true strength."

What are your goals regarding playing football in college?
"Work hard to earn a scholarship and work even harder to keep it. Also to do whatever I can to earn a starting job."

Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?
"Oregon St., Colorado, BYU and many Ivy league schools. I don't have any offers yet."

Would you consider staying in state to play in college?
"Yes, if ASU, UofA or NAU offered me a scholarship I would definitely consider but I would rather leave the state and gain some new experiences."

What would your top 5 college choices be?
"Stanford, Oregon St., Cal, Colorado, Oregon."

Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?
"Kerry Taylor (Hamilton WR that signed with ASU), because he was quick and he ran his routes very well."

Name one opponent who you really respect and why?
"Hamilton High School, because we have never beaten them in football."

What other sports do you play?
"I run track."

What are your best max lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40 yard dash?
"40 Time: 4.58 seconds, 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.31 seconds, Bench: 260 pounds, Squat: 310 pounds and Vertical Jump: 33.5 inches." 

How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?
"Explosive and deceiving because I might not look like an all star but I try to play like one on every play."

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
"My strength is my urgency to get to the ball and make a play. My weakness sort of plays off my strength because I may over run a play trying to make it so bad."

Who is your favorite athlete and why?
"Steve Smith and Barry Sanders because they are or were so explosive and found ways to make plays were there were none."

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
"Go hard on every play so you don't have any regrets, whether you win or lose you know you did your best."

Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?
"Another trip to the playoffs and if we play like we should, a championship."

What position do you think you will play in college?
"Cornerback, even though I can play in many positions I believe that corner would be the best position for me and my team."

What can a college program expect from you as a player?
"Me to give my all on every play."

What is your GPA and SAT/ACT score?
"3.6 GPA, I plan on taking my SAT in early June."

What will the main factors be when you choose a school?
"1st- academic program, 2nd- location and 3rd- athletic program."
