Figueroa Commits to Home Town team

TE Steve Figueroa from Desert Vista HS (Phoenix, AZ) becomes Arizona State's first commitment for the class of 2008. Here is a exclusive with Steve…

The ASU coaching staff and Sun Devils fans alike have been eagerly awaiting their first commitment of the 2008 recruiting class. Well they no longer have to wait as ASU received a commitment from TE Steven Figueroa from Desert Vista HS this morning.

It has been no secret that Figueroa has been a heavy lean towards ASU for quite some time, he has made that publicly known. Figueroa tells, "I have been thinking about it (committing) for the last couple of weeks. They have been my number one for a while."

Figueroa camped at ASU this past Sunday and was close to pulling the trigger then. He adds, "I had the feeling on Sunday. I would have done it then but decided to talk to Coach Hinds (Desert Vista head coach). He came to my house this morning and we talked for 45 minutes. He had nothing but positive things to say."

He then tried calling ASU tight end coach Dan Cozzetto but didn't get an answer. "I left him a message telling him I had some exciting news and to call me back. I then called Coach Erickson and he was very excited. He said it was great to get an Arizona player and hopefully there will be more to come."

When asked how it felt to be ASU's first commit for the class of 2008, Figueroa says, "Very exciting!"

Arizona State has a very good tradition of producing good tight ends including Todd Heap and Zach Miller (who went to Desert Vista also). Steve was asked if this played a factor into his decision. He stated, "I thought about it but it was not a big factor. Hopefully one day I'll go to the NFL and follow in their footsteps."

The 6-5 220 pound Figueroa was one of the state's most highly recruited players. He was offered by Nevada, Colorado State, Nebraska, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Oregon State along with ASU. He was asked if he was a solid commitment to ASU. He stated, "I am a firm commitment. This is it. I'm done. I am not going to take any trips. I called Coach Cav at Oregon State and emailed or texted all the other coaches that offered me to tell them I am a firm ASU commit."
