Mt. Ridge's Locke is more than just a punter

A good kicker is priceless and Jeff Locke from Mountain Ridge HS (Glendale, AZ) happens to be one of the best in the country.

Kickers and punters don't often get the respect that they deserve but a good one's value is immeasurable. Mountain Ridge head coach Bobby Green can attest to this as he as one of the best kickers/punters not only in the state but in the entire country in Jeff Locke. And Locke is not just a special teams contributor, he gets it done at wideout too.

Here are the transcripts from an interview recently done with Locke:

You are really piling up offers, you now hold offers from Stanford, Nebraska, Arizona State, North Carolina, Colorado State, UCLA, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Washington State and San Diego State, what is it like to get all of this attention?

"It's a lot different to have all this attention. It is different for me to go to these camps and for people to recognize me and know who I am. When I first started it was nothing like this and I never expected anything like this."

With all of the offers, have you started to cut down on schools you are considering?

"I have not started to cut down on my list of schools."

What schools are currently at the top of your list? Do you have a favorite?

"I do not truly have a top school or a group of favorites at this time. Right now am just trying to learn as much as I can about each school and I am not planning on choosing a favorite or making a list until after all my unofficial visits this summer. I also need to do my research on what I want to major and other factors that will go into choosing a school."

What is it like being ranked #1 in the country at your position?

"I am excited to be ranked #1 punter in the nation by Chris Sailer (he is also ranked the #4 kicker by Sailer). I don't like to get caught up in all the rankings since I know I still have to work as hard as everybody else to keep excelling at my position."

Kickers have a certain stereotype but you play WR, what do you say to those who say kickers and punters aren't ‘football players'?

"I can't really think of what to say to that. Arguing about the stereotype won't make anything better. A kicker can help his situation by working just as hard as the rest of the team and by performing on the field."

When are you planning on committing? Before or after you visit schools? Before the season so you can concentrate on your senior year?

"I am planning on committing before my senior season. I have planned for my last unofficial visit to be on July 26th so I think I will decide after that."

*Note* Locke has camped at Arizona State, Stanford and Nebraska.

What is your GPA and SAT score?

"GPA is 4.37 and my SAT and ACT was 1840 and 28."

Locke was a 1st team all region performer last year as both a kicker and punter. He averaged 43.3 yards per punt and went 7 for 12 on field goals with a long of 43 yards. He was also 13 for 13 on PATs and many of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.

Here are some clips of Locke. It is easy to see why he is being so highly recruited. Some of his punts have over five second hang times.
