5A1 Southern Region Preview

24-7Football.com keeps it coming and moves down to Tucson for an in-depth look at the 5A1 Southern Region.

5A1 Southern Region

The new look Southern Region drops Marana Mt. View, Sunnyside and Flowing Wells and adds Casa Grande from the Gila Valley Region. Salpointe and Casa Grande both fielded playoffs teams last year and Buena went 6-4 and just missed out. Along with Sunnyside and Sabino, Salpointe has consistently been the class of Southern Arizona, I expect nothing less.

Salpointe- Year in and year out the Lancers have fielded a solid and dangerous football team. They get great coaching, are always disciplined and have the turnout other programs could only wish for. Coach Bene does a great job of grooming younger players early by moving them up to compete with the varsity squad. Almost ever year they call a freshman up, last year being no exception as they had one frosh and 17 sophomores on varsity yet managed to still go undefeated on the lower levels (9-0 JV/ 7-0-1 Frosh).

Last year they plowed through the first nine games of the regular season going undefeated until they meet Sunnyside in week 10. This year's schedule looks a bit more challenging as their first six opponents made the playoffs last year, and seven of ten overall. They open up with Basha and hope to avenge last year's 10-7 quarterfinal defeat.

The losses are heavy but the cupboard is not bare. QB Max Fritz, OT Kris O'Dowd, WR Matt Ransom and OL Chris Ciarvella all take their game to the division-one ranks. They return D1 prospects Lucas Gregor, Kevin Grenier and Charles Blasé and hope that new QB Treavor Eggleston can follow in the footsteps of past Lancer great QBs Fritz and Tyler Graunke. Bene thinks that junior RB Christian Ramirez could be a D1 kid next year.

This offense is always high powered and averaged over 33 points per game last year. Some new guys are being broken in at key positions (QB, WR, TE) but a tough defense that gave up less then 10 points per game will be called upon to get them through. They will be led by LB Moses Robert, Grenier, Gregor and DBs Kyle McCartin and Martin Rodriguez

Key Losses: OL Kris O'Dowd, QB Max Fritz, WR Matt Ransom, OL Chris Ciarvella, P Alex Radovanovich, WR/DB Jacob Hauptman, RB Blake Birmingham, DL Pat Concannon

Key Returners: LB Moses Roberts, DE Lucas Gregor, TE/DE Kevin Grenier, K Charles Blasé, RB Christian Ramirez, RB Chris Miller, DB Kyle McCartin, DB Martin Rodriguez

Buena- The Colts have high expectations this year as they return two of the top recruits in the state in RB Jamal Womble and WR/DB Jake Muasau. Buena went 6-4 last year and just missed out on the playoffs. To their credit, they played seven teams that were playoff bound. The good news is they were able to move the ball and score some points, averaging over 33 points per game but the bad news is the defense gave up 29 points per game including three games where they gave up over 50. It doesn't get any easier as seven of this year's opponents made the playoffs last year. A week 1 match-up with defending state champion Hamilton will gage how good they will be.

Their biggest losses will be UofA bound QB/DB Devin Veal and the loss of three all region OLs to block for Womble. This doesn't bode well for Womble as he will be asked to carry the load while they break in a young QB.

Their week 9 game at Salpointe is a must win if Buena wants to take home the region title.

Key Losses: QB/DB Devin Veal, LB Jared Haymore, LB Louie Muasau, DL Judson Stewart, OL Aaron Krebs, OL Ben Krebs, TE Nathan Weese, DL Stuart Harris, WR/DB Kevin Stewart, DB Justin Dannels, DL Ty Newlon, OL Juanito Martan

Key Returners: RB Jamal Womble, WR/DB Jake Muasau, P Russel Klabough, RB David Alexander, DL Nick Stewart

Casa Grande- I commend Casa Grande for a job well done last year. Winning eight games and making a trip to the playoffs is great no matter where you are or what region you play in. I think the move into this region will prove to be a bit of a tougher task as last year's Gila Valley Region did not field a team with a winning record other then CG and Cibola and none of the Cougars' ten regular season foes made the playoffs.  This year they face some stiffer competition as five of their opponents went to their playoffs last year.

They lose their starting QB and top two receivers but return their top two rushers and 17 players from last year's roster.

A winning season in this tougher region will prove that Casa Grande is for real.

Key Losses: QB Joe Youcupicio, WR/P GT Tipton, LB Cobb Jamie, WR Kevin Keeton

Key Returners: RB Harnish Ayora, DL Mike Subia, RB Mister Jones, (?) Stephon Martinez

Tucson- Flat out, Tucson High struggled last year. They went 0-10 and were held to seven points or less in seven games including five shutouts. To their credit, their schedule was a tough one with seven teams being playoffs caliber but things don't get any easier as seven of this years teams went to the playoffs last year. Winning a game or two and remaining competitive would be a success after last year.

Key Losses: OL Clint Correll, WR Chris Moon, QB Marc Damon, LB Carlos Castro, DB Marc Duran

Key Returners: WR Joe Bass, WR Wilson Reuter, OL (?) Garrett Edgerson
