Westview as a program was very solid last year. The varsity went 7-5 and made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs, the JV went 8-1 and the freshmen went 6-3. Good news for Coach Bowen and the 38 players that return from last year's roster. And the momentum carried over into the off-season as the team went 20-3-1 in passing league tournaments and the linemen finished in the top three at the Surprise, NAU and ASU Big Man Competitions.

Coach Bowen was happy with the how the off-season went and says they "focused on improving athletic performance and speed while gaining strength.  We also worked hard to develop our younger linemen so that we would have less two-way starters.  Right now we only have two projected two way starters."

Players he said made big strides over the summer and will be in the mix for starting jobs are Jay Nelsen (Sr. OLB), Richard Craven (Sr. OLB), TJ Gladney (Sr. OLB/SE), Arturo Luna (Sr. OT), Willie Perrymon (Sr. DE/WB), David Aguirre (Jr. OT/DT), Daniel Gomez (Jr. WB/OLB), Kevin Gunn (Jr. OG), John Higle (Jr. OT), Vincent Keener (Jr. DE/TE), Randy Robinson(Jr. RB/CB), Greg Snoke (Jr. OG/DT), Terrance White (Jr. OL/DL), Jourdon Grandon (So.- QB/FS), Eric Ramsey (So. WLB/FB) and Nathan McOwen (So. SE/CB).

The Knights have six returning starters on offense and get seven back on D and Bowen feels this will be the strength of his team. According to Bowen they have "depth at the skill positions on offense (top two backs and QB return), linebackers (Trevino leads a group of athletic kids that we are very excited about), and secondary athletes (Conley leads a group that performed very well over the summer)."

One thing is for sure, the Knights will run the ball. They have had one of the most potent running attacks over the past few years. Expect to see a lot of RBs Brian Conley and Reggie Nicholson. QB Albert Lizarraga is back to man the ship and a huge offensive line will pave the way for all three. The three have the potential to rush for over 2000 yards again.

They have a few holes to plug on the d-line and in the secondary but juniors Vince Shatwell and Vincent Kreener had good sophomore years and will be asked to step in and contribute right away. Shatwell spent the last part of the year up in varsity and Kreener had 19 sacks in just 7 games on JV. Reggie Nicholson and Brian Conley will be asked to play in the secondary and they will be able to run with anybody.

I like what Westview brings to the table. Their week 8 game at Centennial should be for the region championship.
