5A2 Metro Region Preview

We include predictions, an all region team and a top 10 players for the 5A2 Metro Region.

5A2 Metro Region

Bottomline

This is the same region minus Chavez and Alhambra who stay in the 5A1 Metro. I truly think this region is up for grabs. I like North's chances to recapture the crown with the high number of players returning from last year.

Prediction

1. North

2. Camelback

3. Central

4. South Mountain

5. Carl Hayden

6. Fairfax- No Varsity Team This Year

Breakdown

North- The Mustangs went 4-6 last year but lost four of those games by 14 points or less. 26 players return from last year's underclassmen dominated team and I think they will push for the region title. Treven Masse and Dylan Peralta are very good on both sides of the ball and will be the leaders of this team

Key Losses: OL Mark Anthony-Flores, QB/DB Steven Vallejo, OL/DL Gabe Aguilar, LB Brian Hedegard

Key Returners: WR/DB Dylan Peralta, TE Treven Masse, OL Nico Estrada-Stephen, DL Justin Strong, K Jorge Virelas

Camelback- Camelback went 3-7 last year behind a team comprised of 15 sophomores, 16 juniors and only 11 seniors. Good news for Coach Phillips. Their only major loss is at QB and it looks as though junior Channing Williams is going to take over. The Spartans rushed for 2000 yards between Mike Liggins and Kaylin Ashley and expect to see a lot of them again. Their defense returns its top two players in LB Marco Ayon and DL Benino Gurrolla. Camelback has some winnable games on their schedule and I predict the will push the .500 mark.

Key Losses: DL Brady Hale, LB Morgan Munz, DB Wynton Ashley, DB Robert Mason

Key Returners: RB Mike Liggins, OL Cody Watts, DL Benino Gurrolla, LB Marco Ayon, RB Kaylin Ashley, P Javier Esquivel, WR Nathaniel McCoy

Central- The Bobcats went 9-2 last year including winning their first seven games. Their two loses came to two of the three only playoff teams they faced (North Canyon and Tolleson). The biggest change will be that head coach Kevin Belcher, who had done a great job of turning the program around, has left. They also lose their top passer, top three rushers including stud Dan Duran who also was their kicker, top two receivers and four of their top five tacklers including region defensive player of the year Diamond Banks. Central also has what looks like the toughest schedule in the region with six of their opponents making the playoffs last year.

Central has been the top team in the Metro over the past two years. They get back two way all region player Cody Van Horne but lose a lot from last year including their head coach. Things could be difficult for Central this year and it will be tough to win 9 games again this year.

Key Losses: HC Kevin Belcher, OL Mike Rodriguez, RB/K Daniel Duran, WR Aaron Edwards, DL Sergio Gutierrez, LB Diamond Banks, LB Nathan McQueen, DB Nate Delafield, DB Thermaine Johnson

Key Returners: TE/DL Cody Van Horne, OL Brian Tolle

South Mountain- The Jaguars started the year 0-4 and split their next two before winning four straight and sneaking into the playoffs. Gone are their 11 seniors including QB Robert Benjamin and Region Player of the Year Tariq Smith. They lose their leading passer, rusher and receiver. Young guys Clint Wheaton and Anthony Sanders will be turned to if they want to get back into the playoffs. They only face one team that made the playoffs last year (Central) so that is working in their favor.

Key Losses: QB Robert Benjamin, WR/DB Tariq Smith, RB Joshman Brown

Key Returners: OL Alex Nodora, RB Anthony Sanders, WR Clint Wheaton

Carl Hayden- Everyone knows the struggles that Carl Hayden has faced over the past few years. I want to commend the few kids that have managed to stick it out despite their shortcomings. It shows a lot of heart and character. That being said, not much is expected from the Falcons this year. They will be short on numbers again as only 13 players return. Their closest loss last year was by 28 to Kingman, so being competitive and winning a few games is the objective right now.

Key Losses: WR Joey Manquero, OL Jeremy Smith, K/P Miguel Magallas

Key Returners:
