Friday Night Phenoms

With the season officially underway, highlights week one's top performances.

Salpointe and Brophy kicked off Arizona's season on Thursday and a handful of games started this Friday. So like every week for the next 14 weeks, i will be recapping some of the weeks best performances with the "Friday Night Phenoms".

I will start with first year head coaches that got wins in their first game. Congrats to Charlie Ragle from Chaparral, Rich Milligan from AJ and Pete Wahlheim from Highland for getting their first wins under their belt.

We all know that high school football is won with a solid ground game and we had some great week one performances.

- AJ's Shane McCullen went for 187 yards and 3 TDs while averaging over 10 yards per carry in AJ's win over Sinagua.

- Mingus RB Layton Dickerson had a big night going for 128 yards and 2 TDs on just 15 carries. For good measure he added a receiving TD as well.

- Gila Bend RB Ed Gonzales had 173 yards on just 9 carries. He scored 4 TDs and returned a kick for a score.

- Douglas' Jose Aguirre went for 176 yards and 3 TDs against Bisbee. He also had a receiving TD.

- NWCC's Ross Stanley had 4 rushing TDs against Tonopah.

One QB went over 100 yards on the ground and that was Mt. View's Alex Harris. The senior ran for 110 yards and 2 scores and had 84 yards in the air and another TD.

Another multi threat QB is Hamilton's Gerell Robinson. He went 6/8 for 182 yards and 2 scores and added a receiving TD for all of the people that said he couldn't play wideout.

Robinson's teammate Drew Terrell had a coming out party with 3 TDs (one kickoff and 2 receiving).

Mike Cummings from Chaparral caught 6 balls for 128 yards and 2 scores.

Not to be outdone was Chino Valley's Josh Clelland. He was great two year's ago and was hurt last year. He started off this year with a good one. He caught four passes for 180 yards and 3 scores.

On defense Amphi's Bobby Vargas and San Manuel's Mark Tamayo each had 4 sacks.

I also would like to congratulate Valley Christian for their 43-3 win over 4A page.

I know I missed some kids and their great performances. Email me at with all of your Phenom nominees.
