4A1 Sonoran Region Preview

24-7 wraps up the 4A1 region previews with a look at the 4A1 Sonoran.

4A1 Sonoran Region

CDO has been a solid team and I pick them as my early favorite to win this region. Marana was the only other team that had a winning record and they return my pick for region offensive player of the year. Catalina Foothills, Cholla and Pueblo all finished just below the .500 mark and I think those teams could finish in just about any order.

1. Canyon del Oro

2. Marana

3. Catalina Foothills

4. Cholla

5. Pueblo

Canyon del Oro- CDO lost to eventual state champion Saguaro in week one then rattled off 8 straight wins before falling to Ironwood Ridge in week 10 and in the 1st round of the playoffs. Gone are the top three receivers for returning QB Dan Nicholas but the schedule is manageable and with Nicholas and junior RB Griffin Ronstadt back, I think the offense will be in good shape.

The defense will be anchored up front by DL Brent Lush. LB Johnny Bour and DB Ray Nettling both were solid last year and be asked to step up in place of the lost Aaron Tevis (Boise State) and DL Andrew Dvorak.

Like I stated, the schedule is not overly difficult and I expect CDO to continue with their winning ways.

Key Losses: OL/DL Andrew Dvorak, TE/LB Aaron Tevis, K Jacob Roszko, DB Steve Pope-Rolewski, P Nick Zeigler

Key Returners: QB Daniel Nicholas, RB Griffin Ronstadt, DB Ray Nettling, DL Brent Lush, LB Johnny Bour

Marana- The Tiger's struggled last year against their playoff foes and ended up going 6-5 against a fairly tough schedule. This year, like last year, Marana's offense will go as QB Robert Rowe goes. Last year he accounted for over 2000 yards of offense. He returns some solid offensive linemen to block for him. Replacing RB Tanner Henry and his 1500 yards on the ground will be key.

Marana has plenty of winnable games on their schedule and I expect them to be above .500 again.

Key Losses: RB Tanner Henry

Key Returners: QB Robert Rowe, OL Jesse Backerman, OL Kyle Lundeen, OL Will Yourn, DB Dallin Wengert

Catalina Foothills- CF went 4-6 last year but five of those losses were within 21 points. A four game losing streak killed their chances at the playoffs. New head coach Jeff Fowler inherits some experienced players on defense including LB Ernie Escatcega and DB Doyle Bode but he will have to replace leading rusher Vince Alentado and leading receiver Steve Greer.

CF's schedule also has some winnable games and they could push the .500 mark again.

Key Losses: RB Vince Alentado, TE Brian Riley, WR Steven Greer, OL Kenny Don, DL Sean Tilton, P Chase Beyersdorf, HC Mark Bruenkant

Key Returners: LB Ernie Escarcega, DB Doyle Bode, OL Vince Adams, WR Jacob Richardson, HC Jeff Fowler

Cholla- Cholla was sitting at 4-3 last year but lost their last three and finished 4-6. Head coach Jeff Moat was replaced by Jeff Webb. WR Mike Anaya is their top player but he loses QB Frankie Gonzalez. Not much will be expected from Cholla this year.

Key Losses: QB Frankie Gonzalez, DL Marquell Denson, LB Jose Hernandez, HC Jeff Moat

Key Returners: WR Mike Anaya, HC Tom Webb, OL Fernando Nunez, RB Eric Nava

Pueblo- Pueblo started off 3-0 and lost 7 straight to finish 3-7. That team was dominated and only 22 players return. They faced a pretty difficult schedule last year but averaged only 15 points per game and gave up 30.

They have a couple of capable RBs and don't face all that tough of a schedule so beating last year's win total is possible.

Key Losses: OL Jeremy Hernandez, LB Bobby Lopez

Key Returners: RB Jose Morales, RB Jacob Ferrio, LB Arthur Pina, LB Chris Campbell
