Mt Ridge's Locke Sets Record in Loss

Sunnyside overcame a 20-7 lead to pull out a victory over Mountain Ridge.

Mountain Ridge v. Sunnyside 8-31-2007

This game was the tale of two halves as Mt Ridge jumped out to a 20-7 lead at halftime only to see Sunnyside score 14 unanswered second half points to win the game 21-20.

Ridge started off the scoring quickly. QB Kevin Yost hit RG Giorgio Giurdanella on a screen pass on the first play of the game and Giurdanella raced 85 yards for the score. OL Brandon Gabbard had a nice block to spring Giorgio.

The teams exchanged punts and if you have never seen Mt Ridge punter Jeff Locke kick, it is worth the price of admission. He punts the ball over 60 yards in the air! Another side note, Sunnyside stud RB Jovan Stevenson spent a lot of time flexed out at wide receiver early.

Ridge started the 2nd quarter just like the 1st, with a touchdown pass. Yost hit Giurdanella in the flats and Giorgio raced in from 53 yards out. PAT good. Ridge up 14-0.

Sunnyside put Stevenson in the backfield and on the first play of the next series, he went 75 yards on a draw to the Ridge 2 yard line. QB Jamie Valdez's naked boot made the score 14-7.

Ridge added two more scores in the 1st half on two Locke FGs. The first was a record 63 yarder with room to spare! The 2nd was from 36 yards out and put Ridge up 20-7 at the half.

The teams exchanged punts to start the 2nd half and on Sunnyside's next possession valdez dumped the ball to Stevenson and Jovan went 76 yard down to the Mt Ridge two yard line. Valdez's QB sneak cut the lead to 20-14.

Valdez stayed hot in the 4th quarter, he hooked up with Stevenson early for a 10 yard gain. He then found RB Marc Villacana for 21 and found Villacana again later in the series for a 20 yard scoring strike on 4th and 8 that gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the game with 5:39 left to play.

The Sunnyside defense held and the offense ran the clock out to give Sunnyside their first win of the season.

Sunnyside struggled early but managed to stay just close enough. The Blue Devils are undersized and don't have a huge roster but they play tough. Jovan Stevenson will keep them in any game.

Mt Ridge is young. They have an abundance of juniors on the roster and just need to learn to finish games. They will be a tough team.

Game Balls

Jovan Stevenson is a game breaker. His two big plays kept them within striking distance. I also thought QB Jamie Valdez played well. He hit passes when they counted and had some critical QB sneaks for 1st downs that kept drives alive.

Mt Ridge- Jeff Locke deserves it for hitting a state record 63 yard FG. RB Giorgio Giurdanella had nearly 200 yards receiving and had some nice gains in the run game. QB Kevin Yost was solid. He had to be close to 300 yards in the air.
