Dobson shocks the world, blanks Chandler

Dobson pulls off upset and wins 39-0 over a talented Chandler team

This one of the Valley's top games this week as #2 Chandler took on #5 Dobson. Dobson came out to play and set the tone early.

Chandler looked as if the night would start in their favor as QB Payton LaCivita hit wideout Archie Woulard for a 36 yard gain but that is all the Chandler O could muster and they punted.

Dobson set the tone early, when fullback Christian Long went up the middle for a 41 yard gain. He scored 3 plays later and after the missed PAT Dobson was up 6-0

A three-and-out and a bad punt gave Dobson the ball at the 25. It looked as though the Chandler D would hold but on 4th and 14, QB Cody Lewis threw it to Josh Ferguson, who pulled up and threw it to a streaking Melvin Douglas in the endzone a la The Waterboy. PAT was good and Dobson was up 13-0 just like that.

The struggles continued for Chandler as they fumbled the ball away on their first play of the drive. Chandler recovered and pushed the lead to 16 after a 27 yard field goal.

Chandler went three-and-out again and Dobson looked as though they would push the lead to three scores as RB Kadeem Holmon went up the gut for a gain of 15 and Lewis hooked up with Alex Rowe to put the Mustangs in the red-zone. Safety Harold Bernard thwarted the drive with an apparent 100 yard interception return. A flag kept the points off the board for the Wolves and gave them the ball at their own 8 yard line.

LaCivita hooked up with Woulard a few more times and got Chandler near midfield but LaCivita was picked off by Naji Warrayat.

Neither team mustered up much on their next few series but a critical fumble by Chandler put Dobson one the board again. A bad option exchange between LaCivita and Steven Jackson was recovered by Mario Campos at the Chandler 26 yard line and a few tough runs by Holmon enabled them to go up 19-0 at the half after another FG.

Some halftime notes:

Dion Jordan didn't start the game. He came in on the 2nd series but he and RB Steven Jackson were held ineffective. Dobson came out in multiple offensive sets including 5 and 4 wide but were very effective running ISO. Chandler OL Damien Edwards went out with an injury and came back later with a cast but didn't play. I liked what I saw from Kurt Magnum. I waited all summer to see him in pads and thought he was solid. Played the run well.

If anyone thought the first half was a fluke, the Mustangs were out to prove them wrong. They came out pounding the ball in the second half. Holmon and Long marched the offense on a 4 minute 82 play scoring drive, capped off by an 11 yard TD run that put them up 26-0

Another three-and-out and some more heavy doses of Long and Holmon put Dobson in scoring position. Holmon had a 26 yard run on 3rd and 2 to keep the drive alive and Long plunged in from a yard out. The PAT put Dobson up 32-0 and put the game completely out of reach.

Chandler's bad luck continued as they fumbled the ball away after two straight completions, one to Woulard and one to Michael Dunn. Dunn's fumble was recovered by Ferguson and surprise, surprise, Dobson feed the ball to Holmon and Long. Holmon ended the scoring with a 10 yard TD run to put them up 39-0 early in the 4th.

And that would be the final:

Dobson- 39 Chandler- 0

Other notes:

Jordan didn't play in the 2nd half, not sure why.

Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins was there.

I don't think Chandler crossed the 50 until the 4th quarter.

Dobson came to play and Chandler was flat. Chandler has the athletes but Dobson has a lot of things going for them. They are physical, play very hard, tackle well, are solid fundamentally, don't commit turnovers or penalties and proved they are a force to be reckoned with. They have another big game next week against Hamilton.

Chandler couldn't get anything going. Steven Jackson and Dion Jordan were non-factors and they turned the ball over a lot, can't do that and expect to win. Got to get the ball in your playmakers hands. They are still a dangerous team that will win some games.

Game Balls

Tough to pick just one. Every facet of the team played well. I like what the o-line did for Long and Holmon. Ferguson had some keys plays. Christian Long plays hard! Plays FB and DT and is a force at both. But I will give Holmon and Long my game ball, Holmon rushed for 136 yards and 1 score while Long had 3 TDs.

Archie Woulard was good for Chandler, may be state's most under-rated WRs. Caught 6 balls for 87 yards.
