Westview v. Mesa

38-28 turned out to be the final, with both teams showing a strong ground game.

Westview got the ball and went three straight carries to Reggie Nicholson. He went for 5 yards, -5 and then hit an 80 yarder off the right side for a score. PAT was good. 7-0 Westview with roughly a minute off the clock.

Mesa came out with their strong ground game and RBs Keelan Johnson and Kyree Hart and QB Anthony Gallegos moved the ball into scoring position after 10 plays, 8 were running. This set up a Gallegos pass to Derek Biggs from 17 yards out. PAT missed. Westview up 7-7.

Westview RB Brian Conley returned the kick to midfield and the Knights used their strong run game to eat some yards and more importantly set up a 30 yard Jourdan Grandon to Nicholson pass. Grandon played because of an injury to starter Albert Lizarraga. PAT was good. 14-6 Westview.

Both teams exchanged three and outs and Mesa tied the score up early in the 2nd when Keelan Johnson plunged in from 2 yards outs. Johnson added a 30 yard gain that set up the TD and the 2-point conversion to tie the game up.

Mesa's defense played bend but not break and forced a punt after several longs gains. With 2:28 to go, Mesa relied on the sharp passing of Gallegos to move them back into scoring position just before the half. Gallegos hit receiver Michael Clore on a 33 yard TD that out them up 21-14 headed into the half.

The 2nd half started just like the first, with both teams exchanging scores on their opening drive. Gallegos hooked up with TE Beau Gardner for their score while Westview scored on a 13 yard Reggie Nicholson run from 13 yards out.  The score was now 28-21 and the 3rd quarter is nearly over.

A shanked punt led Mesa to have great field position and three plays later, the Westview defense was able to hold offensive Mesa to a 39 yard Mason Crandell field goal, making it 38-21.

Carr then took the kickoff back 97 yards to the house and despite mounting some decent fights, Westview couldn't pull out the game.

Mesa- 38 Westview 80

Scores right before halftime and at the beginning of the 2nd half really hurt the Knights chances at this game.

Westview is solid. They have a two back system and a QB that can run or pass the ball. This will cause some teams some major fits the other day.

Mesa uses that wing-t offense that coach Kelley Moore brought over from Glendale. Johnson, RB Austin McNeil and Kyree Hart helped clean up one window.

Westview QB Albert Liazarraga being out hurt the team more then one could imagine but sophomore QB Jourdan Grandon stepped in and was great.

Game Balls

Mesa's Tony Gallegos ran the offense to perfection. Gallegos was money with his throws and accounted for a good chunk of yardage.

With out a doubt the best player on the field was Reggie Nicholson. He scored twice rushing, 1 running and returned kick off for a score.
