Friday Night Phenoms

A lot of big backs went for big yards on this week's edition of Phenoms.

Every game becomes even more important as the season winds down. Playoff spots are at stake and region titles are on the line.


Here are some of the players that had big nights on Friday:


Player of the week


I get blamed for not always giving enough credit to the small school players but Joseph City's Zach Baldwin was huge in their 801-2 win over Patagonia. He had 179 yards rushing and 5 TDs on just 9 carries. He also kicked 10 extra points and a 30 yard field goal.




Brophy QB Bryan Berens stayed hot in their win over rival St. Mary's. He was 13 of 19 for 204 yards and 3 TDs.


Peoria junior Vinnie Spano had a nice night. He as 8 of 12 for 215 yards and 2 TDs against Paradise Valley.


Sean Renfree made Georgia Tech fans happy. He was 19 of 23 for 271 yards and 6 TDs against Glendale.


Junior Kevin Yost from Mt. Ridge has made the list multiple times. He was 17 of 26 for 246 yards and 2 TDs against Desert Mountain.


Washington's Jon Camacho was 14 of 24 for 259 yards and 3 TDs against Moon Valley.


Mingus junior Tony Vocca keeps the Marauder offense rolling. He was 12 of 14 for 135 yards and 3 TDs. He also added a rushing score.


Sabino QB Will Naas makes the list for the first time. He had 150 yards rushing and 2 TDs and 80 yards passing against Cienega.


Noo one had a bigger night than Sunnyside's Jamie Valdez. He had 194 yards rushing and 4 TDs. He added 199 yards passing and another score in their shootout with Marana Mt View.


Salpointe's Trevor Eggleston got Salpointe back to .500 with 3 passing TDs and 1 rushing.


Robert Rowe from Marana committed to UNLV last week and he had a big night against Catalina Foothills. He rushed for 215 yards on just 12 carries.


Running Backs


It would be hard to duplicate the night that Keelan Johnson had for Mesa. He had 2 INTs returned for scores, a punt return and a rushing TD all in the first half against Central.


Jamal Miles from Peoria came up big in their win over PV. He had 233 yards rushing and had 3 TDs including a kick off return for a score.


Centennial's Jeff Hughes had 185 yards and a score on just 19 carries in their win over Westview.


One of the state's toughest runners is Mesquite's Luckas Scott. He had 4 TDs in their loss to Chandler.


Mike Brown from Cactus was big again, adding 3 TDs to his season total.


JR Hamm from Corona did not have a huge yardage night but he had 4 TDs in their win over Mt. Pointe. The win sets up a big game versus Desert Vista this week.


Mt. Ridge RB Giorgio Giurdanella had 185 yards and 3 TDs against Desert Mountain.


Camelback RBs Mike Liggins (12 carries 183 yards 3 TDs) and Kaylin Ashley (5 carries 133 yards 2 TDs) had big nights against Carl Hayden.


Agua Fria's Derrick Ross continued on his nice season with 148 yards and 3 TDs against Copper Canyon.


Deveron Carr also added 3 TDs in Chaparral's win on Friday.


Layton Dickerson caught 2 of Vocca's TDs and rushed for another against Sinagua.


Scottsdale Christian Academy's Ryan Tully had 10 carries for 200 yards and 4 TDs against North Pointe and becomes the 1st 1000 yard rusher in school history.


Skyline RB Thomas Brown was huge on Cox 7 on Thursday. He had 191 yards and 3 TDs.


Harrison Evens had 134 yards on just 10 carries and added 2 rushing and a receiving TD.


Dan Moore went over 200 yards again in Marana Mt View loss to Sunnyside. He had 205 and 2 TDs.


Nogales RB Andy Garcia had 237 yards and 3 TDs on just 17 carries.


Andy Know from Pusch Ridge had 192 yards and 4 TDs on just 6 carries.


Buena's Jamal Womble had a big night. He rushed for 238 yards and 4 TDs in their win over Tucson.


Santa Rita continues to have a great season. RB Aubura Taylor had 154 yards and 3 TDs.


Ironwood Ridge RB D'Juan Cherry reached the endzone 5 times against Rincon. He had 172 yards and 5 TDs on 15 carries.


And you have to give it up to the Marana o-line, they paved the way for 529 yards rushing.




Desert Vista's Allante Battle had 151 yards and a TD on 12 carries in the Thunder's huge win over Basha.


Four of Renfree's six TDs went to WR Brandon Hirneise.




Millennium sophomore Marquis Flowers forced a fumble and recovered it and that led to a field goal and he blocked a punt for a safety. These two plays were crucial in the Tigers' 15-7 win over Queen Creek. It sets up a nice game versus Cactus for the region title.


The Gilbert D held Highland to -26 yards rushing.


Is their a better player in Arizona? Devon Kennard had 3 more sacks against Basha and added 67 yards rushing and a TD.




Apollo kicker Chris Arollo makes the list after going 3 of 4 on FGs in the Hawks first win of the season against Independence. He hit from 51 and 45 on two of them.
