Both Cactus and Millennium were undefeated in region play and ranked in the top 10 and with this being Cactus' last region game, this was for the West Valley Region title.
Millennium opened the game with a long drive that saw the Tigers get inside the Cactus 20 but a Tarell Brock fumble thwarted the opportunity as Cactus recovered.
Neither team was able to muster any offense until 6 minutes to play in the half. Cactus' Ryan Wescott sparked some life into the Cobras, when he returned a punt to the 3 yard line.
Two plays later, Mike Brown punched it in and give Cactus a 6-0 lead. The PAT was blocked.
Wescott came up big again on the next series, intercepting an Andre Moore pass on the third play.
Three plays later, Brown scored again. This time from 15 yards out. The two-point try was no good and Cactus led 12-0 with 2:44 to play.
It looked as though that would be the score headed into half but Millennium's snapper put the ball over the punter Zach Livingston's head and he kicked it out of the back of the end-zone for a safety. 14-0 Cactus at the half.
Halftime thoughts: This was a tight game until midway through the 2nd quarter. The punt return, interception and safety really put the Tigers in a bad spot.
Cactus received the ball and went on a 6 minute drive to essentially put the nail in the coffin. Westcott returned the ball to midfield, and then the Cobras used a heavy dose of Mike Brown to move the ball into scoring position. Millennium actually stopped Cactus twice on this drive, once on third down and the second time on a field goal; they were called for personal fouls that kept the drive alive for Cactus. QB Jake
Millennium finally got on the board near the end of the third when
Cactus added another score late in the 4th when
Millennium actually did a decent job of containing Cactus' Mike Brown but the end of the first half really put them in a hole.
Cactus made plays when they had to, didn't have many penalties or turnovers and played efficient football. They walk away with the West Valley Region title. They play #1 Saguaro next week in a tough game before the playoffs.
Cactus DB Ryan Westcott. His punt return started things off for Cactus. He had two INTs and a nice kick return to help set up other scores.
