Saguaro v. Cactus

#1 and #2 square-off in this non-region match-up with the #1 seed in the playoffs on the line.

First I want to say congratulations to Jake Dunn, who seems to be making a nice recovery and made it out to the game and went out with the captains.

Dion Jordan also made it out to the Chandler/Hamilton game and seems to be recovering nicely.

Thanks to all of the 24-7 fans who showed your support of these young men.

Cactus got the ball first but the Saguaro defense forced a three and out. Saguaro got right to work but dipped into their bag of tricks on the opening series.

A 30 yard reverse by Brett Casale set up a 40 yard double reverse pass from Paul Porras to Blake Norlund putting Saguaro up 7-0 early.

Cactus still couldn't muster much offense on their next series and punted the ball away. Saguaro efficiently marched the ball inside the five yard line with Tim Ruben and Beau Burton runs. But they ended up with no points as the center snapped the ball over Ruben's head and Cactus recovered.

Looking to capitalize, Cactus finally got some life in their offense. Some Mike Brown runs and a 15 yard Jake Moreno to Bruce Yeo pass got the Cobras in scoring position. The opportunity was squandered as John Lamoreaux's 38 yard field goal fell just short.

Saguaro went 70 yards on three run plays, two by Justin Shelton and a 39 yard Burton run. They ended up kicking a field goal making it 10-0 middle of the second quarter.

Saguaro attempted an onside kick and it was recovered by Cactus, giving them great field position. The Cobras capitalized on a 30 yard Moreno to Yeo TD pass to narrow the margin to 10-7 with 1:25 to play in the half.

Everyone in the stadium thought that would be the halftime score except the Sabercats. With decent field position, Ruben found Porras on a 40 yard pass play and after a short run by Ruben, he hooked up with TE Max Smith on a 14 yard TD strike.

Saguaro led at the half 17-7.

Both teams exchanged turnovers to start the second half but the Sabercats added to their lead on their second drive on a three yard Ruben to Shelton TD pass. The play was set up by a 46 yard Ruben pass play to Casale to plays prior.

Shelton added another score late in the third on a on yard TD plunge. Score after three was 30-7 Saguaro.

Both teams scored twice in the fourth but the game was pretty much decided at that point.

Saguaro went up 37-7 after another Max Smith TD from Tim Ruben.

37-13 Saguaro after Moreno hits Yeo on a 6 yard TD. Pat was blocked by Corey Adams.

Ruben hit Brett Casale on a 25 yard TD. 44-13.

Last score of the night was Moreno to Yeo. 44-19 final after two-point conversion was no good.

Saguaro went out and showed who is the top team in 4A with an impressive win. Cactus played without TE Caleb Richardson, not sure what happened but he wasn't even spotted on the sideline. He will be needed for his blocking on the edge and as another receiving threat.

Game Ball

It is hard to give one. Saguaro won with a total team effort. Ruben was excellent, the o-line blocked well for Ruben, Burton and Shelton. The defense held Mike Brown in check. Nice game overall.
