Past to Present: 4A Edition

We take a look back at our preseason picks and see how accurate we were.

At the beginning of the year I broke down each region; I predicted who would win and picked players of the year, etc. I wanted to see how accurate I was, so I went back, looked it up and compared my picks to how they finished. Let's see how I did.

4A1- I did very well picking the 4A1 regions. I picked 6 out of 6 region champions. It seemed though in every region there was a surprise team that through off my picks but overall I did rather well.

Desert Sky- In order I picked the region to fall:

1. Saguaro
2. Chaparral
3. Apache Junction
4. Paradise Valley
5. Shadow Mountain
6. McClintock
7. Cactus Shadows

I picked the top and bottom spots but the middle was a little jumbled. This region ended up sending five teams to the playoffs and McClintock pulled off a first round upset over Cactus. The region actually played out like this:

1. Saguaro (10-0)
2. Paradise Valley (8-2)
3. Chaparral (8-2)
4. Apache Junction (6-5)
5. McClintock (4-6)
6. Shadow Mountain (3-7)
7. Cactus Shadows (3-7)

Kino- Here is how I picked it:

1. Sabino
2. Cienega
3. Sahuaro
4. Nogales
5. Desert View
6. Flowing Wells

Again, I picked the top and bottom spots but Nogales' great season threw off the rest of the picks. Here is how it finished:

1. Sabino (10-0)
2. Nogales (9-1)
3. Cienega (6-4)
4. Desert View (5-5)
5. Sahuaro (3-7)
6. Flowing Wells (3-7)

West Valley- Here were my picks:

1. Cactus
2. Peoria
3. Millennium
4. Agua Fria
5. Lake Havasu
6. Copper Canyon

This region was pretty competitive with five teams making the playoffs. Again I picked the top and bottom spots but Peoria and Millennium were flip flopped because the Panthers lost to Millennium. Same for Havasu and Agua Fria, as Havasu beat AF. Here is how it actually was:

1. Cactus (9-1)
2. Millennium (8-2)
3. Peoria (8-2)
4. Lake Havasu (6-4)
5. Agua Fria (4-6)
6. Copper Canyon (3-7)

Western Sky- My picks:

1. Prescott
2. Independence
3. O'Connor
4. Sunnyslope
5. Thunderbird
6. Apollo

Other then picking the winner, this region was all mixed up. I didn't think Independence would slip like they did after losing Kelley Moore. T-bird also had a solid season. Here is how it fell:

1. Prescott (6-4)
2. Thunderbird (6-4)
3. O'Connor (3-7)
4. Apollo (2-8)
5. Sunnyslope (2-8)
6. Independence (1-9)

Sonoran- My picks:

1. Canyon del Oro
2. Marana
3. Catalina Foothills
4. Cholla
5. Pueblo

Did pretty well in this region. I would have been on the money except Pueblo beat Cholla for their one win on the year. Here is how it played out:

1. CDO (9-1)
2. Marana (7-3)
3. Catalina Foothills (5-5)
4. Pueblo (1-9)
5. Cholla (0-10)

4A2- I only picked 2 of the 5 region winners but my runners up were the champs in the other three. I picked the team with the best record on 4 out of the 5 regions and was very close on the others. Overall, I would say I was pretty close.

Black Canyon- My picks:

1. Notre Dame
2. Washington
3. Glendale
4. Greenway
5. Moon Valley
6. Cortez

Washington actually won this region by going 4-1 in region play including a win over Notre Dame, who had the best record. Greenway had a nice season while Glendale wasn't as successful, losing their head coach before the season. They did manage to beat Greenway. Overall, the region was competitive with 4 teams making the playoffs. Here is who finished where:

1. Washington (6-4)
2. Notre Dame (9-1)
3. Greenway (6-4)
4. Moon Valley (5-5)
5. Glendale (3-7)
6. Cortez (2-8)

East Sky- My preseason picks:

1. Higley
2. Queen Creek
3. Coronado
4. Arcadia
5. Seton Catholic
6. Tempe

Queen Creek actually won the region but Higley had the best record. Tempe and head coach Johnny Rodriguez did a nice job. I wasn't that far away on this region. Here is how they finished:

1. Queen Creek (6-4)
2. Higley (8-2)
3. Corondo (6-4)
4. Arcadia (6-4)
5. Tempe (4-6)
6. Seton Catholic (2-8)

Skyline- My preseason picks:

1. Buckeye
2. Desert Edge
3. Mohave
4. Kellis
5. Dysart

I picked the winner but Desert Edge really surprised me. They made the playoffs last year but losing two of their top players to Millennium really hurt. Overall, I wasn't far off. It went like this:

1. Buckeye (8-2)
2. Kellis (6-4)
3. Mohave (6-4)
4. Desert Edge (2-8)
5. Dysart (1-9)

Gila- My picks:

1. Palo Verde
2. Santa Rita
3. Sahuarita
4. Catalina
5. Douglas
6. Amphitheater
7. Rio Rico

Jeff Scurran and Santa Rita should be congratulated for a job well done. I picked them to have a turn around season but didn't expect them to win 9 games. Overall, I was very close on this region. Here is how it went down:

1. Santa Rita (9-1)
2. Palo Verde (7-3)
3. Catalina (5-5)
4. Sahuarita (4-6)
5. Amphi (3-7)
6. Douglas (3-7)
7. Rio Rico (0-10)

Grand Canyon- My picks:

1. Mingus
2. Bradshaw Mountain
3. Flagstaff
4. Page
5. Sinagua
6. Coconino

I had the top 3 right on the dot but Coconino really fell off. Overall, not bad. Here is how it actually went:

1. Mingus (10-0)
2. Bradshaw (7-4)
3. Flagstaff (6-5)
4. Page (4-6)
5. Sinagua (1-9)
6. Coconino (0-11)
