Both teams came into the season with high expectations. Brophy played sound, mistake free football for much of the season and it landed them in the title game for the second time in three years. Desert
The Bronco D continued to play tough; forcing a punt after DT Mike Tree sacked Cole Pembroke twice. Some tough runs by Ray Polk and a Bryan Berens to Lieb pass set up a 46 yard John Wells field goal. 10-0 Brophy.
The Thunder joined in on the scoring when Pembroke hit Allante Battle on a 54 yard bomb. PAT was no good, 10-6 Brophy after one quarter.
Brophy went right back to action on the next possession as Berens hit Bobby Rodrigues for a 21 yard gain followed by an 18 yard pass to Maggi. Polk got the Broncos 9 yards closer and finally Berens found Lieb for his 2nd TD from 10 yards out. 17-6 Brophy.
Score at the half: Brophy 17 Desert Vista 6
DV got out on the right foot in the second half when Pembroke hit battle on a short pass over the middle and Battle zig-zagged his way through defenders for a 78 yard touchdown. 17-14 Brophy.
Brophy answered right back on the next possession when Berens hit Lieb for his third score. 24-14 Brophy.
The Thunder kept fighting though as they marched down the field and into scoring position. Any hopes of a score ended when Drew Maggi picked off Pembroke in the end-zone once again.
Brophy capitalized; driving the field and added to their lead with another Wells FG. This one from 23 yards out. 27-14 Brophy.
Once again, Desert Vista mounted another drive to keep their hopes alive. They drove the field 65 yards and narrowed the lead to 6 when Pembroke hit TE Steven Figueroa in the corner of the end-zone. 27-21 Brophy.
But Brophy put the nail in the coffin on the very next drive when Berens hit Lieb from 25 yards out for his 4th score. 34-21 Final.
Give credit to both teams for a hard fought game.
Bryan Berens was excellent but I have to give it to Sean Lieb. He caught 8 passes for 129 yards and 4 TDs.
