Does Wheaton Have An Early Leader?

With recruiting heating up in the desert, Chandler athlete talks early offers. has the details...

Chandler High School has been a busy place this week, with college recruiters from across the US coming in to look at their prospects.

The Wolves currently have three players holding division-one offers and a player picking up quite a few in the past few weeks is a player that just transferred to the school in January.

WR/CB Markus Wheaton prepped at Mountain Pointe last season and was a star on both sides of the all for the Pride. He earned all-region recognition last year on both sides of the ball catching 23 passes for 476 yards and 6 TDs. He added 315 yards rushing yards and 4 scores and had 49 tackles and 1 interception on D.

Some kids get lost in the shuffle when they transfer, not Wheaton. He has locked in five scholarship offers in the past few weeks. They come from Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State and SMU. Does Wheaton have an early favorite?.

"Oregon is a school I will look closely at," he tells last night in an exclusive interview.

"My cousin Kenny played there (90's cornerback) and I have loved them since I was small and been watching them forever."

Wheaton (6-1 175) says he has been on campus twice when he was younger to compete in youth track competitions.

Colorado seems to be another program in the mix in the recruiting battle. "My brother (Marquese) was being recruited by them. I went on an unofficial visit to their junior day and they offered a few days after. I love the head coach, Dan Hawkins. He is a happy person and always jumping around."

Wheaton says that he only has slight interest in the other three programs that have offered but he does comment on each.

On SMU- "I have had no contact with them. I just got the offer letter in the mail."

On Oregon State- "Coach Cavanaugh is recruiting me and called and offered. They are the only school that wants me as a wide receiver. Everyone else is recruiting me as a corner."

On Arizona- "Coach Kish is recruiting me but I am not real big on Tucson."

Wheaton says that he has interest in Cal and Michigan but only Cal has shown any interest back. They stopped by the school recently along with Boise Satte, Colorado State and Arizona State.

Wheaton says he does not have any plans at the moment to take any unofficial visits or attend any camps this summer. But he will be in attendance at the Under Armour/ Phoenix Combine on May 24th.

Wheaton says he carries a 2.8 GPA and will take the SAT this weekend.
