5A/4A All Star Game

Swan song for many of 2008's top players tonight in Surprise

Many people, including myself, took an early look at the roster of the North (5A1/4A2) v. South (5A2/4A1) all-star game this evening and Surprise and thought the game easily looked to be in the North's favor. They had a higher number of D1 kids and even had more players. But in the end the South prevailed in what turned out to be a high scoring affair.

Friday night's 3A-1A totalled just 14 points but this evening's game matched that output in just one quarter of play.

The scoring got kicked off when Brophy teammates Bryan Berens and Sean Lieb hooked up for a 55 yards TD bomb to put the North up 7-0.

The South squad matched that after the North attempted an onside kick that was recovered by the South, setting up great field position. Westview RB Reggie Nicholson plunged in from a yard out to even the score at 7.

It didn't take the North long to answer as Hamilton RB Nathan Jeffery added a score of his own early in the 2nd quarter. Score 14-7 North.

Pinancle QB Evan Johnson, who was sharp all night, led the South down the field and Marcos RB Harrison Evens added a one yard Td of his own to know it back up at 14.

With just seconds left in the half, the North's Daniel Thomas, DL from Mesa High, blocked a South punt that bounced through endzone for a safety.

Score at half 16-14 North.

But the second half was all South to say the least. Canyon del Oro's Derrick Matlock picked off a pass and took it in for a score to put the South up 21-16 and they never looked back. They played tough defense the rest of the half and picked off the North squad two times to put the nail in the coffin.

Evan Johnson and Harrison Evens added TDs to make the final 35-16. Evens, who is walking on at ASU, had a spectacular 80 yards TD run that set him up for MVP honors.
