Brophy Beats Bishop Gorman

The Broncos kicked off the season in proper fashion, beating defending state champion Bishop Gorman at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The football season kicked off in the Southwest with a match-up between state champions from neighboring states. Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman, last year's 4A champion from Nevada, traveled to Glendale, AZ to take on the defending 5A1 state champs, Phoenix Brophy Prep.

Brophy got the ball and started things in sloppy fashion, committing several penalties and getting a bad punt that set of Bishop Gorman at midfield.

Brophy's defense, which would turn up huge all night, started things off right, forcing a three and out after Bronco linebacker Adam Holzmeister made two tackles for loss. Holzmeister would later leave the game with a broken arm.

The Gorman snapper put the ball over the punter's head with Brophy recovering at the 29 yard line. Five plays later, the Broncos went up 7-0 after RB Max Leonesio ran in from five yards out.

The teams exchanged punts and Gorman got into the scoring with a 79 yard touchdown run by QB Jon Hubner. The PAT was blocked by Trent Murphy. The score at the end of the 1st quarter, 7-6 Brophy.

In the 2nd quarter, neither team could muster up much offensively. Brophy's defensive line kept Bishop Gorman in check and with a ton of new players on offense, Brophy never got a drive going.

It was Brophy's defense that set up the Broncos' next score. Mike Tree pressured the QB and Murphy cleaned it up with a sack, one of three he had on the night. This pinned Gorman deep in their own endzone and they took an intentional safety. The score was now 9-6 and that is what the score was at the half.

Neither team scored in the third and it wasn't until three minutes were left in the game that Brophy put Bishop Gorman away. Another Gorman punt gave Brophy the ball at the 41 yard line and on 3rd and 3, QB Beau Maggi hooked up with Harry Danilevics for a 22 yard gain and three plays later Maggi found junior TE A.J. Steimel in the back of the endzone to make the score 16-6.

Brophy linebacker Bryan Bayardi sealed the deal, intercepting a pass to put the nail in the coffin.

Final- Brophy 16  Bishop Gorman 6

This game was typical game to start the season. Both teams were a bit rusty and there were several mistakes that put both teams in bad positions.

Brophy's defense, like we predicted, was stellar. They carried the team and dominated a much bigger and athletic team. Bishop Gorman has some players, it just seemed like they never were able to get into a grove. They will have to play much better if they plan on repeating as state champs.

Player of the Game

The Brophy defensive line was a terror all night! Trent Murphy, Mike Tree, Seyi Adebayo and Adam Nunez were all over the field, always in the QB's face and made mince meat of a much bigger Gorman offensive line.
