With as much fire power as this game had, many expected the Chandler v. Desert Vista game to be a high scoring affair but this first points weren't put on the board until two minutes left in the first half.
Chandler QB Kyle Yount hooked up with Markus Wheaton several times on this drive and Wheaton added a rushing touchdown from 17 yards out to make it 7-0 with under two minutes to play in the 1st half.
DV quarterback Cody Sokol put together a nice drive that saw them march the field to tie the score at the half. Sokol hit wide receiver Casey Bolena for passes of 19 and 40 before finding him in the endzone with 16 seconds left in the half.
The third quarter was owned by Desert Vista. Chandler's first series was thwarted by a Cole Pembroke pick and the Thunder capitalizez on another Sokol to Bolena TD pass. 14-7 was the score early in the 3rd.
Chandler punted the ball away and again the Thunder scored. This time on a 19 yard Devon Kennard TD run that was set up by a Sokol to Ryne Rezac 27 yard pass. 21-7 DV headed into the 4th.
The teams exchanged punts deep into the 4th quarter and Chandler finally got back on the board with a Yount to Caleve Deboskie 19 yard TD pass. Yount hit Wheaton on a 39 yard bomb to get the Wolves in scoring position. 21-14 advantage DV.
With just a few minutes left in the game, DV was trying to run the clock out by LB Rodney Reagans forced a fumble and LB Tim Buron scooped and scored from 40 yards out to get Chandler within one. On the PAT attempt, DV was offsides and with the ball on the one yard line, Chandler decided to go for the win. Devon Kennard came up huge with his second sack of the game. 21-20 With under 3 minutes to play.
Chandler's defense forced a three and out and had a chance to win the game but Anders battle picked off Yount's pass and DV walked away with a 21-20 win.
This was one of the best games I have been to this year. It was hard fought and featured some very talented players.
DV is much different than last year. Not the same offensive firepower but they have two big backs in Kennard and Marcus Washington. Once Washington is completely healthy, they will be dangerous. Casey Bolena is a good receiving threat and DV plays good defense, led by a stellar d-line with Danny Mullarkey, who had at least three sacks in this game, and Kennard.
Chandler is one of the most talented teams I have seen and I expect them to make noise in the playoffs. They moved the ball in the air but need a little more consistency in the run game. They have a good defense as well, their secondary is as good as you will find.
For Desert Vista, wide receiver Casey Bolena had a huge night. DE Danny Mullarkey is taking full advantage of people keying on Kennard and he was very disruptive.
Chandler WR Markus Wheaton is a stud!
