Centennial v. Desert Vista

Coyotes beat Desert Vista on Cox 7's Thursday Night game of the week

Many expected this game to be a high scoring affair but it turned out to be quite the opposite. With Centennial pulling out a 20-7 win over Desert Vista in a game that was not decided until late in the 4th quarter.

It looked as though DV was going to capitalize early. After a Centennial fumble, the Thunder marched the ball inside the 10 yard line but were stopped on downs. Desert Vista's defense played tough and forced a punt, which was shanked and DV got the ball back at the 20.

This time DV took advantage of the good field position and got on the boards when QB Cody Sokol hit Casey Bolena over the middle. Score after the PAT 7-0 Desert Vista.

Centennial had the ball three times in the 2nd quarter and could have come away with points on all three possessions but instead went into half behind 7-6. They missed two 41 yard field goals and finally got on the board when Anthony Hughes scampered 25 yards for a score on 3rd and two after it looked like the DV defense had him bottled up.

Neither team put up any points in the third quarter as each team played solid defense. Centennial DE Jimmie Lewis seemed to completely take over the game for the Coyotes, recording sacks, pass break ups and pressuring Sokol all night. DV was able to contain RB John Hughes for the most part with a great team effort.

Centennial managaed to put some points up in the 4th to take the lead for the first time. QB Dain McFarland hit receiver Matt Baugh twice on the drive, one for 35 yards and the other on 4th and 2 that put the Coyotes inside the 15. Two John Hughes runs later and it was 14-7 Centennial after McFarland hit Austin Arias on the two-point conversion.

On the very next series, CHS linebacker Reggie Umuolo picked off Sokol and returned it for a score which out the nail in the coffin.

Final 20-7 Centennial over Deser Vista

Desert Vista palyed well enough to win but Centennial's play makers stepped up when they needed to. For the most part it was a defensive battle. The marquee matchup between Marcus Washington and John Hughes kind of fizzled as both teams played solid defense.

Game Ball

Centennial defensive end Jimmie Lewis was unblockable. His sack on Sokol late in the 4th only ended what was a great effort by Lewis. He had several PBU's, sacks and hit or pressure Sokol so many times, Sokol is ure to be sore in the morning.
