Before you knew it Chavez was up 21-0 and it looked like a route was on. QB Brandon Cluff hooked up with Lyle Blummears and a long TD pass and RB T.J. Smith scored twice to put the Champions up three scores early in the first period.
Junior RB Darrion Murphy knocked some life into Trevor Browne when he returned the kickoff 96 yards for a score. PAT was no good. 21-6.
But again, the Chavez offense continued their hot streak, marching the field as Cluff hit Essence Haynes and Trae Gossett from nice gains before Smith punched in his 3rd TD of the night. It looked as though Chavez would take a 34-6 lead into halftime as freshman sensation Devonte Neal returned a punt for a score in the last few minutes before halftime.
Trevor did not quit and wound up getting in two scores just before the half. The first one came on an 87 yard David Robles to Demetrius Baugh scoring strike. On Chavez's next possession, defensive end Ronald Jones picked up a fumble and rumbled in to make the score 34-20 at the half.
Trevor came out strong in the second half, intercepting a Cluff pass and turning it into a score as Murphy punched the ball in on four consecutive carries. 34-27 was now the score but this would be as close as Trevor would get.
Cluff found Gossett for another long TD, Chavez blocked a punt for a safety and Smith punched in his fourth TD on the night to make the final 50-27.
Chavez dominated the 1st and 4th quarters to keep this game out of reach. Great effort by Trevor Browne. They got within one score but Chavez's pass rush kept the ball out of Baugh's hands for the most part and Chavez's had a few more weapons to work with.
RB T.J Smith and WR Devonte Neal share it tonight. It is hard to believe Neal is a freshman. He is great in the return game and is a dangerous receiver. Smith was the workhorse, going over 100 yards and scoring 4 times.
I think Darrion Murphy was very good for TB.
