Payson offensive tackle Matt Wilson admits to being surprised when he got the phone call informing him that he had received his first offer.
He says, "I had been talking to them (Northern Arizona) a lot and my head coach called me and told me they had talked to him and offered me."
His thoughts, "I was surprised, I really wasn't expecting it. I thought they would wait until after the year was over."
Wilson (6-6 270) is having a dominating season for 9-0 Payson on both sides of the ball. He has 61 tackles and 3 sacks on defense as well as being one of the best blockers in the 3A ranks. Matt says he played "the best game of my life" two weeks ago against then undefeated Blue Ridge, recording 14 tackles and a sack.
Schools have taken notice. Wilson says that Air Force, UNLV, Adams State and Azusa Pacific have all been in contact but that NAU is his current favorite.
"They (NAU) have been the front runner for awhile. I have been up there for camp and a big man challenge," he says. But do not expect him to commit any time soon, Wilson plans on deciding "after the season is over and after some trips".
Wilson reports a best bench press of 295 pounds, squats 515 and has run 5.0 in the forty.
