Big Second Quarter Pushes Chaparral Past Paradise Valley
Paradise Valley got on the score board first late in the 1st quarter when Danny Compton hit a field goal from 27 yards out to make it 3-0.
Chaparral marched down and answered behind the arm of Spencer Stone. Stone found Chris Arnold for a 15 yard gain followed by a 35 yard strike to WR Brandon Martin that put the Firebirds in scoring position. Stone got the first touchdown of the night on a sneak from 1 yard out. 7-3 Chaparral.
It didn't take PV long to answer themselves as QB Kevin Spain hit Ebo Makinde in stride for a 56 yard TD pass that made it 10-7 after the PAT.
PV gained momentum after forcing a punt and Spain hit Weston Diehl for a 53 yard gain that put the Trojans deep in Chaparral territory. The Firebird's defense hung tough, forced a field goal that was missed by Compton.
The next series of events dramatically altered the game. It took Chaparral just two plays to score. Stone hit Martin for a 45 yard gain and RB Dwayne Garrett ran in from 35 yards out. 14-10 Chaparral and they never looked back.
Senior Corey Shano intercepted Spain that gave the Firebirds great field position and they capitalized when Garrett plunged in from 3 yards out.
Score at half 20-10 Chaparral.
PV's David Godley intercepted Stone to start the second half and PV got 3 points out of it after Compton connected from 41 yards out. Chaparral drove and missed a field goal of their own but ended up getting points out of the situation. PV's snapper put the ball over Compton's head after Chaparral forced a punt. Compton kicked the ball out of the back out the endzone for a safety.
The free kick that was returned by Taylor Lewan to the 35 yard line and on the first play, Garrett raced in from 35 yards out that put the score at 28-13 midway through the 4th.
PV mounted a drive but was stuffed on 4th and 1 from the 1. Chaparral moved the ball out, punted the ball away and PV added a score with 35 seconds left on the clock on a Spain touchdown pass. The onside kcik was recovered by Chaparral and the Firebirds won the game 28-20.
This was a hard fought game and PV was hurt with Jake Brown being out and Ebo Makinde not playing in the second half. A strong second quarter fueled Chaparral to this win.
Without a doubt has to go to Dwayne Garrett from Chaparral. He had three scores on the night and easily topped the 100 yard mark.
