The 2002 Desert Classic Review!

The 2002 Desert Classic, hosted by Phoenix Country Day High School, once again provided many close games with many of the top 2A and 1A girls programs in the state. This year's tournament gave many teams the opportunity for a final tune up before conference play begins. The 2002 Desert Classic seemed to lack the high scoring games of years passed, but made up for it with many close games and defensive battles.

2002 Desert Classic Review

The 2002 Desert Classic, hosted by Phoenix Country Day High School, once again provided many close games with many of the top 2A and 1A girls programs in the state. This year's tournament gave many teams the opportunity for a final tune up before conference play begins. The 2002 Desert Classic seemed to lack the high scoring games of years passed, but made up for it with many close games and defensive battles.
Every participating team brought and played with their strengths, but the deciding factors came down to the big scorer, team defense, or a team depth.

POOL PLAY Records
Scorpion Division
1. Santa Fe Christian (Ca.)        2-0
2. Phoenix Country Day 1-1
3. Precision              0-2

Santa Fe brought their trademark fundamentally sound style of play along with a strong team defense. A lack of speed and second shooter hurt them later in the actual tournament. Country Day, brought scoring with Garagiola and Fastenburg to the table, but could not get them going together in the same game. Precision…well.

Coyote Division
1. Phoenix Christian 2-0
2. Mayer        1-1
3. Gila Bend        1-1

Phoenix Christian attacked with team speed along with a consistent and contributing bench. A lack of size caught up with them when running into Joseph City. The Milligan sisters contributed on both ends of the court for Mayer, while Gila Bend relied on their depth at the guard position.

Rattler Division
1. Scottsdale Christian 2-0
2. Pusch Ridge 1-1
3. Ajo             1-1
4. Salome       0-2

Scottsdale brought all the right ingredients to win this tournament. Of course Wendy did here thing shooting the ball well. Team defense, rebounding and half court execution proved to be their clincher. Pusch Ridge easily had the biggest team in the tournament and rebounded well, for PR the problem was getting enough shots up to rebound.

Gila Monster Division
1. Joseph City 2-0
2. Valley Lutheran 1-1
3. Yuma Catholic 0-2

Joseph City brought a great backcourt and a group of hard working rebounders. However, when running into SC, JC found that they were one scorer short. Valley Lutheran brings hard work and determination night in and night out. For now they are struggling to get points on the board, especially with Kavena, Patterson and Huser playing very little if at all.
