A misque led to Mt. Ridge jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. After forcing a punt, Brophy return man Ryan Suniga muffed the kick and Ridge recovered at the 2 yard line. Kevin Yost hit Taylor Larkins from 2 yards out to give the Mountain Lions the early lead.
Brophy answered back with a nice drive. RB Max Leonesio started the drive with a big first down run on 2nd and 15 and capped the drive with a 26 yards scamper to tie the score at 7-7.
Ridge drove the field behind the arms and legs of Yost and got into field goal range but came up short after missing a 32 yard attempt.
After exchanging punts, Leonesio went on a tear, ripping off 3 first down runs before adding his second score of the night. 14-7 Brophy late in the 2nd.
Brophy forced another punt and got the ball back with under a minute to go and while most thought they would take a knee and head into the locker room happy with the 14-7 lead, head coach Scooter Molander thought different. QB Sam Quinif hit Scott Roberson and Max Eller for big gains that put the Broncos in field goal range. Alex Garoutte hit from 22 yards out to give his team a 17-7 halftime lead.
Mt. Ridge wouldn't die. They came out, forced a three and out and marched down the field but once again came up short and scoreless. It didn't take Brophy long to capitalize as Quinif hit Leonesio on a screen pass that he took 61 yards to the house. 24-7.
The Broncos then went for the kill. They attempted an onside kick, recovered it and went down and kicked another field goal to end the third quarter with a 27-7 lead.
Ridge drove the length of the field behind Yost's arm. He found Cody Wollschlager on a 46 yard gain after scrambling out of the pockter. Then he hit Travis Hutchinson for a first down before hitting Wollschlager again for a 5 yard TD. 27-14.
But again, Brophy would match. They recovered the onside kick attempt and went down and scored again. This time it was Beau Maggi who hit Ryan Suniga for a 15 yard score. 34-14.
Trent Murphy scored on a blocked punt for Brophy and Hutchinson caught another TD for Ridge with a minute to play to give us the final of 41-21.
Brophy didn't make mistakes. They drove the field, picking up nice gains while being patient. They did not commit turnovers or have many penalties. What really hurts Mt. Ridge is their lack of a run game. Yost was scrambling for his life as Mike Tree, Seyi Adebayo and Murphy were in the backfield all night. You know a team is struggling upfront if they must throw the ball from the 2 yard line to score.
Easy pick here. Max Leonesio was the workhorse for Brophy all night. He totaled three TDs.
