La Joya v. Skyline

Skyline dominates the second half to send La Joya home

La Joya got the ball and it didn't take long to turn their first possession into points. QB Jeremiah Cornist took the first play 20 yards and a 15 yard face mask penalty had the Lobos in scoring position. Cornist scampered for a 22 yard gain and Kei Harris punched it in from 2 yards out to give La Joya an early 7-0 lead.

It took Skyline no time to answer. They had good field position after the kickoff and Damari Lewis got things off right with a 16 yard run. Shortly after, QB Mike Bailey rumbled for a 35 yard score to tie it at 7.

Skyline's D forced a punt on the next possession and the O got right back in scoring range. Bailey hooked up with Tommy Brown for a 20 yard gain and then added 23 more yards on a keeper. Lewis got the Coyotes in the redzone on a nice 15 yarder. The drive stalled and on the FG attempt, Cornist blocked it but a personal foul gave Skyline the ball back inside the 5. This time they capitalized on a 1 yard Brown TD. 14-7.

But Skyline answered themselves behind Bailey and Brown, who bothered rumbled for first downs on the drive. Bailey hooked up with Matt Ditsworth for his first passing TD of the night. The 2-point play was no good and Skyline took a 20-14 lead.

They managed to make up those points as La Joya snapped the ball over the punter's head on the next Lobo drive and Skyline took a 22-14 lead.

Skyline forced another La Joya punt as the managed to contain Cornist with just under two minutes to play. But La Joya was able to get on the board in a turn of events just before half time. Big DT Sajvonte Pitts tipped a Bailey pass, grabbed it out of the air and rumbled in for a score from 26 yards out. This is every linemen's dream.

Skyline went to the locker room with a 22-20 lead a the half.

But this game was a tale of two halves as Skyline scored 28 points in the 2nd half to La Joya's 8 and advanced to the 2nd round of the 5A2 playoffs.

Tommy Brown was instrumental in the Coyotes pulling away. He set up the first score on a 41 yard run that lead to Bailey hooking up with Damari Lewis from 7 yards out. Brown scored two more times in the 3rd period on passes from Bailey that gave them a 43-20 lead in the 4th.

Final in Avondale: Skyline 50 La Joya 28

La Joya hung early but once the Skyline D bottled up Jeremiah Cornist, La Joya did little offensively. Tommy Brown dominated the second half and is a stud on both sides of the ball. Skyline was deeper and more physical and that ultimately led them to victory.

Game Ball

No surprise, Tommy Brown. He scored 4 times, made plays all over the field on D and forced and recovered a fumble.
