Players Bustin' Out Small ball style!
I'm taking a page from Coach T's book and bringing you my picks for bustin out players. I will do these throughout the year when a players or team catches my eye.
1A Bustin' Out Player
Mike Way, 6-0 senior forward from Fort Thomas. An after thought going into his senior year, Way contributed little during his soph and junior years at the Fort. He is going out with a bang though. Way is leading the #2 1a Apaches in scoring, teaming with allstater Dona, to form the best three point shooting duo in the 1a. The Fort has won six of the last nine 1a titles, and Way will have a lot to do with it if they get another.
2A Bustin' Out Player
Donald Jenkins, 6-6 senior center from Williams. Who is this guy that is scoring over 24 points per game and as many as 38? Who is averaging over ten board as game and has gone as high as twenty? Who led Williams to a 7-1 record going into the Camp Verde Tourney? Right now there are still more questions than answers, but this senior who is playing his first year of basketball for the Vikings could answer bigger questions; who led Williams to their first 2a playoff basketball appearence ever and who led the Vikings over Soriano led Mayer....
3A Bustin' Out Player
Omar Lopez, 6-2 senior center from Rio Rico. Can anyone deny that Rio Rico has been the surprise team of the year in the 3a thus far standing at 10-1, including a sparkling 3-0 record against 5a teams. While guard Eric Chavez leads the team in scoring, it will be up to the under-sized Lopez to produce in a region of giants (the 3a south) to get Rio to the playoffs. If his 22 point and 14 board night against Seton Catholic's 6-7 center is any indication, he will be up to the task. Look for this weekend to be a telling one for Lopez and Rio, as they go up against Coolidge the 3rd and Safford the 4th.
