Top Players for 09

Cord Deal RB/LB, Mike Dewitt OL/LB

Desert Ridge – head coach Jeremy Hathcock

2008 Record:

New Region:

Pima Region with Westwood, Mtn. Pointe, Skyline, Perry, Marcos De Niza, Casa Grande, Desert Ridge

Thoughts on New Region:

Not the worst, not the best.  Good for us being the smallest D1 team in 5A.

# of Returning Starters:

4 Offensive, 4 Defensive

Focus on Spring Ball:

Had 9 coaches that were either RIF'd or took promotions (2 Coordinator positions, and 1 OC College position).  Kids took it personally that Gilbert school district got rid of the other coaches due to budget cuts.  They realize that this Spring and next year truly is what they make it.  Had a lot of leaders emerge in the process.

How you thought Spring ball/7 on 7 went.

We played over 70 passing league games so we should be ready offensively for the season.  Line is a little thin in depth.  WRs are really big with good athleticism.  We had three different defenses that we tried out due to coaching changes so defense is an unknown for now.

Players coming out of Spring:

Sam Papa (JR) LB/WR 6'3 212 4.7 40yd.  Had 10 sacks last year and over 100 tackles.  Paris Clark (JR) 6'2 205 FS/WR returning 1st team all-conference WR. Both of these kids are being recruited heavily.  Sam Papa got a personal invite from Pete Carroll to come to his camp next year (while we were at the USC passing league).

JV player that will make impact:

Jordan Leeper LB (JR) 6'1" 220.

Goals for 2009:

Region Championship and make it too playoffs in 5A1.

Players that have stood out to you this summer:

Besides the ones that I already mentioned, Jared Weverstad (State Heavyweight Champion) 6'3" 280 (SR) C 1st team all-conf as a junior, Juan Barron 6'6" 305 (SR) OG has good feet and is very tough, Kevin Pantastico QB 6'3 180(SR) grew 3inches and improved his 40 yd. time to a 4.68 (last year was a 4.95). Preston Simmons 6'1" 245 (LT) runs a 4.8 40 yd dash, and Richard Belles 6'2" 228 OG that is the hardest worker we have. We will only start two seniors on defense for the 2009 season.

Westview – head coach Jeff Bowen

2008 Record...

12-2, 4-1 in the Desert West Region

New Region...

Desert West Region

Thoughts on New Region…

Region is tougher with Millennium and Cesar Chavez coming into the region...both were playoff teams in 2008.

# of Returning Starters...

7 on offense and 5 on defense

Focus on Spring Ball...

Teaching the younger players the system, develop leadership and team chemistry...determine who will step into roles left open by graduation.

How you thought Spring ball/7 on 7 went...

Spring ball went well, over 100 kids participating. 7 on 7 and big man tournaments went well. We played a lot of kids which helped us develop depth.

Surprise player coming out of Spring...

Many players developed throughout spring and summer workouts...two players that showed great potential were two sophomores, Shayne Miller (RB/DB) and Cody Rediger (OL/DL), Cody is the brother of Brandon Rediger (Sr. this year) and Vince Shatwell (graduate from 2008 team)

JV player that will make impact:

Tony Hernandez was the leading rusher and tackler from the 9-0 JV squad. He will start at WLB and will also see time at FB this season.

Goals for 2009...

With Centennial, Hamilton, Highland, Willow Canyon, and the rest of the Desert West region on our schedule our goal will be very simple, stay focused, getting better throughout the preseason, take one game at a time so that we play well each Friday night. Win the Desert West Region, win the 5A-2 State Championship, which is probably the goal of most of the teams throughout the state.

Players that have stood out to you this summer...

We had many standouts throughout the summer, Jourdon Grandon Sr. (QB/DB) had a quality summer and now has 13 D1 offers, as expected. Eric Ramsey Sr. (MLB/HB) looked good on both sides of the ball and has a D1 offer from Southern Illinois. Brennan Bowen Jr. (C/DT) was the leader of the Linemen while breaking lifting records for both Westview and NAU. Nate McOwen Sr. (SE/DB) showed great skills on both sides of the ball and is starting to get some looks from D1 schools

Other players that had very good summers:  Willie Chaffee-Sr. (OG), Emil Romero-Sr. (SLB/OT), Jordon Champion - Jr. (TB/CB), Brandon Rediger - Sr. (TE/DE) along with many others...not sure if  you want me to list them all.
