Centennial built a 17-0 lead by halftime and looked to be in control of the game but Brophy came out in the second half and gave the Coyotes a run for their money.
Centennial hit first, kicking a field goal that was set up on a deep Dain McFarland to Matt Baugh pass. A 43 yard run by Anthony Hughes on the first play of the second quarter gave Centennial a 10-0 lead.
A huge 4th and 2 pass from McFarland to Austin Garday made the score 17-0 at the half.
Brophy did not fold. The drove the field on the opening drive and scored for the first time on an Alex Garoutte 51 yard field goal that would have been good from 60. The Brophy D stepped up, forced a punt and the offense capitalized on the very first play as Peter Kelly raced 69 yards up the right side to paydirt. The PAT was blocked. 17-9 Centennial.
The next half quarter of play was full of turnovers and game altering plays. With all of the momentum, Brophy forced a fumble, recovered it and marched down the field and it looked like they would walk away with at least a field goal. Instead, Roc Lopez stripped the ball at raced down to Brophy's 5 yard line. Centennial fumbled the ball right back and this time the Broncos put points on the board with Garoutte's second FG of the day. 17-12 Centennial.
Brophy continued with the tough defense, forcing a punt. Again with the Broncos driving, Centennial came up with a huge turnover. This time DL Dylan Lusk sniffed out a Brophy screen and walked away with an interception that again thwarted any hopes of a Brophy score.
Centennial was able to run out the clock and added a late McFarland TD to keep the game out of reach.
Final: Centennial 24 Brophy 12.
This was the best game I have been to this year. Although it was sloppy with turnovers and penalties, it was very exciting, the atmsphere was great and the stadium was packed. Centennial looked much bigger and faster but Brophy is scrappy and plays tough defense. The lack of a pure home run hitter for Brophy was the difference in my opinion.
Let's hope Centennial's Austin Arias is okay. He was on the sideline in crutches at the half.
I am going to give this one to the Centennial D. They came up with two huge turnovers when Brophy had a chance to score. The first on Roc Lopez's strip and return to the opposite 5 yard line and Dylan Lusk's INT. Both times the Broncoes were easily in Aex Garoutte's field goal range and could have led to a Brophy lead.
