This game was packed and these two unbeatens did not disappoint, as it came down to the wire. But it was Mountain Pointe that came out on top 26-23, winning the East Valley Region title with a perfect 10-0 record.
The first half was a shoot out. The two teams combined for 41 of the game's 49 points in the first two quarters.
Marcos got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead, after a Devon Jones' 38 yard field goal.
MP went right to work on their run game. They showed an unbalanced front that they rarely got out of all night and pounded the ball down the field with the combination of star backs Davon Jones and DeAndre Currie. Jones ripped off a 37 yarder that got the Pride to the 2 and he followed with a 2 yard score a play later. 7-3.
MP picked off Zach Schirra on the next series and turned it into points when Jon Mora boomed a 50 yard field goal. 10-3.
Flags ept Marcos' next drive alive. A Ramon Anbreu run plus a personal foul equaled a 37 yard gain for the Padres and a late hit on 3rd down gave MdN an automatic first. Junior RB Anthony Shivers rumbled in from 16 yards out to tie the score at 10. This was the first of 3 scores for Shivers.
It didn't take long for MP to answer. Jones too off for a 51 yard score of his own to put the Pride back on top 17-10.
In similar fashion, Shivers raced 43 yards for his second score and it tied the game back up.
Marcos' D stepped up and stopped the strong run game but a roughing the kicker call gave MP the ball back. Pride QB Austin Blom hit WR Garrett Holle on a surprise pass that moved MP to the 16 yard line. Coach Norris Vaughan then feed his horse, Davon Jones giving him the rock on four straight plays that lead to another score just before the half.
24-17 at halftime.
The Marcos D got a stop on the opening drive of the second half but a bad snap put the O in bad field position, deep in their own terriitory. Mountain Pointe came up with a safety. 26-17.
At the 5:14 mark in the 3rd, Shivers scored his third TD, this one from 42 yards out. The PAT was no good. 26-23.
This would end up being the final score. Marcos was never able to mount much of a drive in the 4th and MP used their strong run game to run out the clock, including a clutch 3 yard run on 4th and 1 by Jones to seal the win and an undefeated season for Mt. Pointe.
This was a GREAT high school football game. Both teams played hard and the outcome could have gne either way.
MP is vastly improved and is a no non-sense team. They play hard, don't turn the ball over, hustle everywhere they go. There is talent here. They are one-dimensional but don't care. They line up and play smashmouth football.
Marcos is a dangerous team that I can see going deep in the 5A2 playoffs. They made a few costly mistakes that really cost them the game.
Both RBs played well. Shivers for Marcos and Jones from MP but I got to give it to Jones. He is the real deal. He's a big back with plenty of speed. I became a fan of his game instantly.
