Sabino uses strong ground game to roll to an all Tucson 4A1 final

Sabino played bend but not break defense and used an opportunistic offense to build a 21 point lead against the three-time defending state champs Saguaro Sabercats and eventually win 28-6 to secure their spot in the 4A1 state title game.

Saguaro opened with the ball and drove the field only to be stopped on 4th and 4. Sabino took advantage, getting first down plays from Stephan Fraser and Keanu Nelson before QB Nathan Brooks hit Mike Brown for a 35 yard TD score. 7-0 Sabino.

Again Saguaro drove the field only to be stopped short on 4th and 3. And again, Sabino capitalized. This time Casey Westhoven raced in from 65 yards out. 14-0 after the PAT.

Sabino built a 21-0 lead in the 3rd after Brooks hit Nelson on a 51 yard screen pass.

It wasn't until the 4th quarter that Saguaro got on the scoreboard. Danny Clark rumbled in from 2 yards out. PAT no good 21-6.

Sabino put the nail in the coffin when Brooks pushed in from a few yards out.

Final 28-6

Bottomline

Saguaro had their opportunities. They had the ball in scoring position twice in the first quarter but came away with no points. The Sabercats also threw an INT late in the 2nd quarter that kept points off the board.

Sabino used a strong rushing game, pick your poison, Keanu Nelson and Stephan Fraser are one of the top RB tandems in the state. Sabino will play CDO in the title game.
