7AA-East Conference preview for second week

Harmony Grove gets to prove itself against Rison this week and Hampton takes on Class AAA powerhouse Prescott.

The Bearden Bears gave new head coach Patrick Russell plenty to smile about Friday as the Bears defeated Spring Hill, 31-14. Bearden rushed 47 times for 272 yards. Junior Ben Owens led the way with 113 yards on 15 carries.

Norphlet also started out with a win. The Leopards beat Woodlawn 39-21. Quarterback Craig Coleman passed for 152 yards on 8 of 16 passing. Seven of the receptions were to Nick Lambert who gained 83 yards. Running back Deunta Talley rushed for 78 yards on 17 carries.

Harmony Grove whipped Strong 48-0. The Hornets had 336 yards on the ground and scored six touchdowns. Nick Green was the leading rusher with 121 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns.

For Smackover, Westside and Sparkman it was not a good Friday night. Smackover was whipped by Mineral Springs, 43-0. Westside was beaten by Lafayette County, 42-6, and Sparkman lost to Mountain Pine.

GAME OF THE WEEK

For the first time ever, I have two games of the week. Both will tell a lot about two teams who are darkhorses as far as the playoffs and conference title hopes are concerned.

Harmony Grove vs. Rison

The Hornets will find out how good they can be Friday. Rison is coming off an emotional win over rival Fordyce 28-21. Rison should win the 8AA with little problem and can make a deep run into the playoffs. If the Hornets win, it would be a big boost for the rest of the season.

Hampton vs. Prescott

The Bulldogs open with a win over Hazen. Now they face the second-ranked team in Class AAA, the Prescott Curley Wolves, who defeated Gurdon last week. Hampton will have its hands full but a close game or win would give the Dogs a big boost for the rest of the season.

Both games will give a clearer picture of how the conference will shape up this season.
