PARAGOULD - The Paragould Rams scored 21 of their 28 points in
the first half, en route to a 28-6 victory over the visiting
Beebe Badgers. It was the AAAA-East opener for both teams.
The Rams (3-1, 1-0) got their first score on a four yard run
from quarterback Zach Noel. Alex Brummett kicked his first of
four PAT's to make it 7-0.
Running back Seth Mitchell scored next for the Rams on a 17 yard
sprint to the end zone, giving the Paragould a 14-0 lead.
Beebe defensive back Justin Payne recovered a Ram fumble at the
Paragould 49 to set up the Badgers' only score. Quarterback Jake
McIlwain connected with Nick Taylor for 14 yard touchdown with
1:10 left in the half. Beebe (1-3, 0-1) missed the PAT, leaving
the score 14-6.
The Rams made the most of the time left before intermission.
Paragould marched 66 yards in eight plays, and capped the drive
with a 15 yard toss from Noel to Mitchell, setting the halftime
score at 21-6.
Paragould's last touchdown came on the opening drive of the second
half. The Rams launched a time consuming 87 yard drive on 16
plays. Noel scored from the one yard line with 3:28 left in the
Beebe would threaten to score in the fourth quarter. The Badgers
used the remainder of the third stanza to drive 61 yards to the
Paragould four, before stalling out with 10:29 left in the game.
"We did something we hadn't been doing all year," said Paragould
head coach Brian Carter. "Our offensive line did a really good
job protecting our quaterback so we could run our offense."
Mitchell led the Rams ground game, rushing 12 times for 101 yards.
McIlwain completed 9 of 22 Badger passes for 102 yards.
