STATE SOFTBALL RANKINGS (Top 20 & Divisional)

The top three teams this week are Pacifica, Santiago and Mater Dei and that order could easily be different. Check here for both the top 20 overall rankings and the top 10 rankings for five divisions.

(After games of April 12; last week's rank in parentheses)

1. (2) Pacifica (Garden Grove) 17-1

After Santiago and Mater Dei split a doubleheader last Saturday, you can really throw a blanket around the top three teams. We'll go with the Mariners this week basically because they have one less loss than Santiago and two less losses than Mater Dei. Pacifica swept a pair last week against Bolsa Grande.

2. (1) Santiago (Corona) 14-2

Taryne Mowatt tossed a two-hitter and struck out 13 in the first game against the Monarchs, but the Sharks dropped the second game, 6-3, and in our view had to slide down from No. 1 to No. 2 even though they have a head-to-head win over Pacifica. Remember, that game was in extra innings and the international tie-breaker was used.

3. (3) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 16-3

Allie Aleman had the big hit for the Monarchs in the second game of the doubleheader against Santiago with a three-run triple in the fourth inning. Mater Dei also won a league game last week, 7-0, over St. Joseph of Lakewood. This week, No. 7 Rosary was on the schedule.

4. (4) El Modena (Orange) 11-2

The Vanguards won their opening game of the Woodbridge tourney last Saturday by a 7-1 score over Kennedy of La Palma. Yes, Kennedy is not the same team this year without Michelle Turner.

5. (6) Corona 13-1

According to Matt Jocks of the Riverside Press-Enterprise, Corona coach Jo Ann Byrd now has 404 career wins. A belated congrats, coach, for the 400th milestone win. We only have five others in our files with that many, although research on softball coaching records is spotty.

6. (7) Rosary (Fullerton) 16-3

A 2-0 win over Bishop Amat of La Puente ended the week for the Royals. Darcie McClenndon scattered four hits while Linsday Nuckolls led the offense with two of her own.

7. (8) University City (San Diego) 10-3-1

Lisa Dodd pitched a one-hitter and clubbed two more homers in a 19-0 romp over Point Loma. She didn't even have to play earlier in the week in a 22-0 blowout of Coronado. Note: We already know the Centurions dropped a game early this week to Bonita Vista and probably won't still be No. 1 in the San Diego Section next week.

8. (11) Notre Dame (Salinas) 13-2

The Spirits beat two of the top teams in the Bay Area on consecutive days, but weren't able to quite yet wrap up the Mission City Invitational tourney title due to rain. On Friday, Notre Dame pinned a 2-0 loss on previous CCS No. 1 team Mitty and the next morning took care of Belmont Carlmont by the same score. Sophomore Melissa Pura's two-run double accounted for all the runs pitcher Kim Reeder would need against Mitty.

9. (10) Freedom (Oakley) 9-1

Freshman pitching whiz Amanda Williams (who recently had back-to-back no-hitters) was a little off against Deer Valley last week with six hits allowed, so it was up to the offense and Riannon Thomas delivered with a three-run double to key a 4-0 win.

10. (5) Mitty (San Jose) 16-2

The Monarchs had their chances in the loss to Notre Dame as Alex Sutton had three hits. She was thrown out at third twice and another runner was out at the plate trying to score on a grounder.

11. (nr) Bullard (Fresno) 15-1

Get reacquainted with the Knights. Coach Jaime Maxey has the program back among the state's elite. That statement might be premature, but this ranking is not after Bullard downed preseason state No. 1 Clovis last week, 1-0. Tracy Cook picked up the shutout on a five-hitter and also had an RBI single.

12. (13) Bonita Vista (Chula Vista) 16-1

Chelsea Carlson's three-run homer in the 16th inning gave the Barons a tough 6-3 win over Valhalla of El Cajon. Emily Turner went all 16 in the circle, gave up eight hits, whiffed 15 and homered as a batter.

13. (16) Valencia 13-3

The Vikings chalked up wins of 3-0 over Hart and 8-0 over Burbank. Christina Ross pitched a one-hitter with 11 Ks vs. Hart (Valencia's sixth straight win over its league rivals). Tori Rocco then pitched a perfect game with 8 Ks vs. Burbank.

14. (12) Clovis 16-5

Before losing that 1-0 game last week to Bullard, the Cougars hadn't lost a regular season game to another Central Section school for two years. With that loss plus the double-dip losses to Freedom, it looks like the Cougars just aren't going to be as good this season as initially thought.

15. (17) Mt. Carmel (San Diego) 12-1

The Sundevils capped another strong week with a 9-3 triumph over San Pasqual of Escondido. There could be a good debate next week between them and Bonita Vista for No. 1 overall in the county.

16. (20) Royal (Simi Valley) 12-4

The Highlanders had a great week in the Marmonte League, first with a 2-0 win over previous No. 14 Simi Valley and then with a 1-0 win in eight innings over No. 17 Thousand Oaks. Devon Hofflan had an RBI single in the first game and drove in the game-winner in the second, too, on a sacrifice fly.

17. (15) Thousand Oaks 7-4-1

Before losing the extra-inning affair to Royal (a team the Lancers beat in the two teams' first meeting of the season), coach Gary Walin's team blanked Calabasas, 15-0.

18. (18) North Salinas (Salinas) 14-4

The Vikings are 1-1 vs. Notre Dame and 1-1 vs. Mitty. It's those other losses that knocks them down in the rankings.

19. (19) Vanden (Travis AFB) 13-3-1

It's hard to imagine the Vikings being the No. 1 overall team in the Sac-Joaquin Section, but they do have a win over Freedom and the previous No. 1, Sheldon, just lost 3-0 to a Foothill of Pleasanton squad that is ranked below Freedom in the East Bay.

20. (14) Simi Valley 11-5

After losing the first game of the week to Royal, the Pioneers bounced back to shut out Newbury Park, 4-0. Lisa Modglin hammered a pair of triples and had three RBI.
