Both Maciel and McElroy only allowed one hit to the other team in each of their 16 innings and that hit was to each other. Maciel also wound up with 35 strikeouts to set a reported L.A. City Section record and will go onto the all-time state list in a tie for eighth. McElroy's strikeout total also was high at 28.
The game was the second this year in the state in which both pitchers logged a prolific number of strikeouts. The first one was in a Marmonte League game in the CIF Southern Section. Both Mandy Kilionski of Thousand Oaks and Danielle Ellement of Newbury Park struck out 27 batters in that 18-inning game.
And the Maciel-McElroy duel was not the only game to generate a hard-to-believe strikeout total just last week. In a CIF San Diego Section battle, Lindsey Sommer from Serra of Tierrasanta moved to No. 4 on the all-time section list with 27 strikeouts in a 1-0 win in 14 innings vs. Patrick Henry of San Diego. Sommer threw a no-hitter in regulation and finished with four hits allowed in her 14 innings. Earlier this season, Sommer had an 18-strikeout no-hitter against San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas.
