STATE STAT STARS OF THE WEEK

This week's tip of the hat for notable individual outings from baseball and softball games played May 19-24 includes a baseball player from Dunn High of Los Olivos. And anytime we can mention the Earwigs it's a good week.

Baseball

Matt Baugh (Deer Valley, Antioch): Tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 7-0 triumph over Ygnacio Valley of Concord. The hit was by the first batter he faced.

Nolan Bruynickx (Arcadia): Hurled a one-hitter with 10 Ks, scored a run and drove in another, resulting in a 3-0 victory over Rialto in a Southern Section Div. I first round playoff game.

Matt Camasta (Desert Christian, Lancaster): Batted 5x6 with seven RBI in a 27-8 first round Southern Section Division V playoff win over Bellarmine-Jefferson of Burbank.

Michael Cardinalli (Monterey): In a 8-1 triumph by the Toreadores over Saratoga in the Central Coast Section Div. II playoffs, Cardinalli was a tough out indeed with three hits, including a home run and a double.

Steven Chavez (South Hills, West Covina): The junior smashed two home runs and had five RBI in a 11-3 Southern Section Division III first round playoff win over Bellflower.

Jared Clark (Valencia): Hurled a four-hitter with nine Ks and blasted a two-run homer in leading Valencia over El Rancho of Pico Rivera 9-2 in a Southern Section Division II first round playoff game.

Scott Coppick (California Lutheran, Wildomar): Tossed a four-hitter with nine Ks and copped a three-run homer in a 9-0 win over Whitewater. It was a Southern Section Division VI first round playoff game.

Marc Donion (College Park, Pleasant Hill): Smacked two home runs for three RBI in leading the Falcons over Miramonte of Orinda 4-2.

Tommy Hawk (Cabrillo, Lompoc): Here he is again, this time for a five-hit 4-2 pitching win over Monrovia in a Southern Section Division IV first round playoff game in which he also clouted his seventh season home run.

Darren Gemoll (Leland, San Jose): Junior standout slammed two homers and collected seven RBI as part of a four-hit outing in the Chargers' 15-1 romp past Lincoln of San Jose in the CCS Div. II playoffs.

Nate Gravier (Laytonville): Whacked three triples and had nine RBI while batting 4x5 as Laytonville banged out a 21-6 win over Leggett Valley of Leggett.

Phil Hughes (Foothill, Tustin): The junior pitched and batted his way to his 12th season win against no losses in a 6-2 victory over Calabasas in a Southern Section Division II first round playoff game. His grand slam and five RBI led the way.

Kevin Kline (Dunn, Los Olivas): Did it all for his team, firing a no-hitter with 16 Ks and batting 6x7 with a home run and five RBI as the Earwigs crawled all over Pacific Christian of Los Angeles 39-0. It was a Southern Section Division VI first round playoff game.

Alex Massari (Quartz Hill): Clouted a three-run and a two-run homer in a 13-2 Southern Section Division II first round 13-2 playoff win over Atascadero. The Rebels attacked Atascadero for five home runs and 17 hits.

Lucas Miranda (Ferndale): Fired a five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in defeating St. Bernard of Eureka and ace pitcher Cody Flynn 1-0. The teams tied for their league title with 10-2 records and this was "just" a playoff game to determine seedings for the North Coast Section playoffs, but both pulled out all the stops.

Vince Ortiz (Vasquez, Acton): Smashed two home runs and had five RBI as his team downed Sage Hill of Newport Coast 14-2 in a Southern Section Division V first round playoff game.

Steven Page (Windward, Los Angeles): In a Southern Section Division V wild card playoff game against Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge, Page tossed a three-hitter with six Ks and hammered a three-run homer in leading his team to a 4-2 victory.

Alex Porter (Rincon Valley Christian, Santa Rosa): Batted 4x5 with a home run and triple amd had seven RBI in helping his team down Upper Lake 17-0.

Brandon Rauch (El Capitan, Lakeside): It looked like the Vaqueros were warming up their bats for the postseason in a 24-6 win over West Hills of Santee. Rauch led the way with a pair of homers and also hit two home runs earlier in the week in a 14-0 win over El Cajon Valley.

Zach Robinson (Horizon, San Diego): Zach broke the San Diego Section record for RBI in a season with his 63rd in a 12-1 win over La Jolla Country Day. Robinson ended the game going 4x4 with a homer and six RBI. He broke the previous mark of 62 set in 1990 by Todd Cady of Grossmont.

Mark Rzepczynski (Servite, Anaheim): Shut out Alhambra 2-0 with a two-hit, 14-K performance in the Southern Section Division I first round of playoffs.

Chris Schwinden (Golden West, Visalia): Dominated on the mound with a one-hitter and his teammates provided more than enough support in a 8-1 triumph vs. Centennial of Bakersfield in the Central Section Yosemite Division Small School playoffs.

Ryan Stevens (Del Campo, Fair Oaks): Led his team to an impressive 8-1 win over previously state-ranked Placer of Auburn with two home runs and six RBI in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff game. Ryan is just a sophomore.

Matt Strom (Temecula Valley): Fired his second no-hitter of the season with 7 Ks in a 7-0 Southern Section Division II first round playoff win over Chaffey of Ontario.

Chuckie Tiffany (Charter Oak, Covina): He's becoming a household name, this time for a one-hit, 15-K, 2-0 shutout over Lutheran of Orange in a Southern Section Division III first round playoff game. He just missed pitching a second consecutive no-hitter, giving up a hit in the seventh inning.

Danny Williams (Hart, Newhall): Blasted a grand slam and two doubles and had six RBI as Hart moved on to the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs with a 14-1 win over Westlake of Westlake Village.

Richie Wilkins (Madera): Richie's team was picked by many to be No. 1 in the Central Section at the start of the season, but was not able to get over that Clovis Unified bump in the road. Before the Coyotes lost to Clovis in the semifinals, they impressed in a 10-1 win over McLane of Fresno. Wilkins hit two home runs to pace the offense.

Zech Zinicola (Arlington, Riverside): Pitched a five-hitter with nine Ks and no earned runs and batted 2x3 with a home run and three RBI in a Southern Section Division I first round 10-2 playoff win over Montebello.

Softball

Jenny Belak (La Salle, Pasadena): Batted 4x4, scored three runs and stole five bases as La Salle defeated Mojave 12-2 in a five-inning Southern Section Division V first round playoff game.

Erica Coelho (Claremont, San Diego): Tossed a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts and also smashed a home run as her team defeated Crawford, 5-0.

Melissa Dykema (Valley Christian, Cerritos): Hurled a perfect game in a Southern Section Division V first round 9-0 playoff win over Capistrano Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano.

Ashlee Freeman (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village): Pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and drove in two runs in leading her team over Mary Star of San Pedro 3-0 in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

Jessica Kerr (Justin-Siena, Napa): Hurled her 13th season shutout and 21st win in a 3-0 triumph over San Rafael in the Marin County Athletic League championship playoff game. Justin-Siena, 21-2 going into the North Coast Section playoffs, is the only Class A team in an otherwise 2A league. The senior Kerr raised her career pitching record to 45-5.

Laura Kimborowicz (Canyon, Anaheim): Blasted two home runs and had four RBI in a 9-0 Southern Section Division II first round playoff win over San Gorgonio of San Bernardino.

Brittany LaRosa (Diamond Bar): Pitched a three-hitter with 10 Ks and blasted a home run in leading the Brahmas past Eisenhower of Rialto 3-0 in the Southern Section Division II first round.

Kelli MacKenzie (Cajon, San Bernardino): Hurled her 8th season no-hitter with seven strikeouts as Cajon defeated Chaffey of Ontario 7-0 in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Jennifer McElroy (Western, Anaheim): Fired her eighth season no-hitter, for sure, as Western downed Schurr of Montebello 4-0 in the first round of the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Emily Nelson (Polytechnic, Pasadena): Hurled her team into the second round of the Southern Section Division V playoffs with a 2-0 no-hitter against Whittier Christian of La Habra. It was her fourth no-hitter of the season.

Amanda Pinkston (Dublin): Was in the pink last week, pitching a 14-strikeout no-hitter in a 10-0 six-inning win over Mt. Diablo of Concord.

Anjelica Selden (Vanden, Travis AFB): Tossed a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over a tough East Union of Manteca team in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff game. Selden and Vanden went on to win the title.

Kelsie Schumacker (Woodcreek Christian, Riverside): Pitched a complete game with 13 Ks and batted 4x4 as the Royals downed Sherman Indian of Riverside 21-0 in a Southern Section Division VI first round playoff game.

Becky Voaklander (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad): In a 7-0 win over Poway in the San Diego Section Div. I playoffs that ended the season for the defending champions, Voaklander finished with a perfect game and struck out eight.
