DB Guru Elite Earn Semper Fi Combine Invite

VISALIA, CA – The DB Guru Tony Perry held his Top Gun Football Camp at the College of Sequoias on Saturday. While three of the top 2013 prospects highlighted the field, it was 2014 wide receiver Michiah Quick that stole the show. He along with 12 others underclassmen earned invites to the Semper Fi Proving Ground combine after their performance…

The attention was upon Fresno (Calif.) Central defensive back trio of Hatari Byrd, Johnny Johnson, and L.J. Moore Saturday on the COS practice field. The three are among the top players in the 2013 class, and all will participate at the Gridiron Kings event next week in Florida. However, neither could outperform their 2014 teammate – Michiah Quick.

God given talent, and God given surname, Quick was the smoothest player on the field whether playing wide receiver or cornerback. Easy to see why he picked up double-digit offers as a sophomore.

Blessed with great size, fluid hips, impressive footwork, and solid route-running, only his speed can be questioned. Nonetheless, he was fast enough to make every defensive back look silly on Saturday.

"He's cold," is all DB Guru Tony Perry had to say about Quick.

Perry, who coaches Central's defensive backfield, has sent over 40 high school players to DI colleges during his high school coaching career, and another 15 plus junior college standouts during his two years at COS. He says Quick is among the top high school players he has coached in his over 20 years of coaching.

But the 2014 prospect wasn't the only underclassmen to impress on Saturday. There were 12 others that earned invites to Semper Fi Proving Ground Combine after their performance.

Quick aside, Perry named Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan safety Adam Soesman his underclassmen MVP after his stellar workout. Position coach Bernard Hicks, who started three years at Cal (2006-08), said Soesman is good enough to have competed on some of his Golden Bear squads.

Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West center Gage Garabedian moved well in drills for his 6-foot, 250-pound frame. The 2014 prospect was the easily the most impressive linemen on either side of the ball.

Fresno (Calif.) Central running back Nick Wilson pushed teammate and Oakland Nike Football Training Camp SPARQ MVP ReSean Jones in the fastest man competition falling just inches short of winning the award. Nevertheless, Wilson, who runs a 10.8 100m, moved extremely fast for a 190-pound rising junior. He gained over 800 yards last season, and he is poised to have a tremendous season sharing the load with Jones in 2012.

The underclassmen were on hand to earn their combine invites, but the rising seniors didn't disappoint either.

Fresno (Calif.) Edison quarterback Khari McGee showed off his rocket arm and superb athleticism in drills. With five offers in the books, McGee is arguably the top signal caller in Central California in the 2013 class.

Not to be outdone, Fresno (Calif.) Memorial quarterback Nick Kinder, who's receiving interest from Portland State, had his moments.

Clovis (Calif.) cornerback C.J. Broussard made the most strides on Saturday. Competing with both Johnson and Moore in corner drills, he held his own against two of the best in the nation. Broussard has great size, and he is aggressive in coverage.

Brothers Eric Wingfield and Errian Wingfield, safety and running back, respectively, out of Fresno (Calif.) Sunnyside shined at their positions. The latter is the top back in the 2013 class out of Central California.
