HAYWARD, Calif. -- While San Leandro (Calif.) athlete Stephen Johnson III split his time between receiver and defensive back on Sunday at the NFTC, he's been dividing his time even more when it comes to the schools recruiting him.
With Fresno State and UCLA coming in recently for the four-star prospect – the Bulldogs offering at quarterback -- he's already had quite a busy spring.
Every school that's so far offered the 6-foot, 180-pounder – including Arizona State, Boise State, California, Colorado, Colorado State, Duke, Fresno State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah State and Utah -- have come by to see Johnson at school, with the Bruins, the Bulldogs, USC and Washington set to visit during spring ball, which started on Monday.
There are, however several schools that stand out.
"Cal, UCLA, Oregon and ASU are recruiting me the hardest, and Duke," said Johnson, who tore off a 4.41 laser-timed 40 this weekend as part of the SPARQ testing – the fastest 40 on the board, and topped only by the 4.35 that he ran in January at the U.S. Army Combine.
What stands out about some of those schools?
"Academics, especially Duke, and UCLA," Johnson said. "I'm looking at those two schools, and Cal, based on academics. That's basically what I'm looking for: Education. Right now, I'm trying to see schools and see what's going on."
