VIDEO: Leaf Talks Decision Timeline
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- T.J. Leaf is a busy man. After spending last week at the Battle at the Beach with his Compton Magic 17U team, he is taking this next weekend to try out for the 17U USA National team, and spending it away from his AAU teammates.
“It will be a great experience, just going against the best players in the country,” said the five-star power forward from El Cajon (Calif.) Foothills Christian. “I’m really going to be trying to make that team. I’m also leaving my teammates. That’ll be not too good, but I’ll be rooting for them in the [Super] 64.”
In fact, Leaf took Saturday off, to prepare himself, and his teammates, for a weekend without him.
“I need to get ready for USA, get healthy, and they need to get ready for 64 without me,” Leaf said.
As for recruiting, Leaf has two visits set for the near future.
“I’ve been to Indiana, Michigan, UCLA, San Diego State. I have two scheduled in the beginning of August – I’m going to Arizona and Arizona State – so those will be fun,” Leaf said. “Then, I don’t have any more scheduled, but I’d like to see pretty much all of them, if I could.”
There are 10-12 schools Leaf said that are recruiting him the hardest, including Oregon, UCLA, San Diego State, Arizona, Arizona State, Texas, Louisville, Wisconsin, Iowa, Florida and Duke.
Leaf said that the schools he’s visited “are all great in different ways; I’ve liked them all,” and that he wants to wait a bit before making any kind of decision, but he wants to narrow his field relatively soon.
“I’d like to make a commitment maybe in February or March, so a good little bit before that,” he said.
