Gumbs Pulls Down Two New Offers

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Chandler Gumbs has had a stellar season for Stellar Prep, and he's being rewarded for it, with offers from San Diego and Penn. He talks about his new offers and his latest tape with Scout.com.

HAYWARD, Calif. -- As he sails into the semester break with a 3.77 core GPA and a 4.0 overall GPA, Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep do-everything star Chandler Gumbs is starting to see more recruiting attention from the Ivy League.

“I also have new interest from the Pac-12 and the Mountain West,” Gumbs says.

Gumbs’s latest offers came from San Diego and Penn, following Colorado State and Sacramento State. Gumbs says that the Pac-12 team poking around the most is Washington State (“I’m hearing from them a lot,” he says).

“I’ve done a lot of research on UPenn,” says Gumbs. “They’re Ivy League, they’re usually in the running for the Ivy League championship, most of the time. They’re a strong competitor. They’re the No. 1 business school in the world, so I love it.”

Gumbs wants to pursue a business career after college, so having Wharton right there makes Penn a viable option.

“I’m hopefully trying to get a visit out there,” Gumbs says. “Hopefully, I can set one for the early part of December.”

Gumbs improved quite a bit through his senior season, and ended his year with two picks and several breakups in the Thunder’s third-round playoff loss to Richmond (Calif.) Salesian. He began the season with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In the first round of the playoffs, Gumbs rushed for 175 yards, including Stellar’s last three touchdowns in a 34-20 win over San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian, with touchdown runs of 57, 6 and 59 yards.

“I sent out my games one through three, one through six, and I’m about to send out my final season highlights,” says Gumbs, who’s still hoping for more Pac-12 attention. “One through six highlights, everyone says it’s fast and physical, and they notice my aggression and the way I pursue the ball.”
