SoCal Baseball Players Make College Commitments

Two Southern California players who faced off against one another in the finals of the National Classic last year have made college commitments that, barring forays into professional baseball, will pit them against each other for the next few years as well.

Adam Simon, a Bishop Amat pitcher/outfielder who helped lead the Lancers to the top spot in Cal Hi Sports' state baseball rankings last year, will wear the Blue and Gold of UCLA. Simon, a 5-10, 170-pound righthander, batted .304 last year with two homers and 25 RBIs. On the mound, he was 8-1 with a 1.05 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 60 innings.

Across town, USC received a commitment from Cypress outfielder Jason Filarey. Filarey, 6-1, 180 pounds, was one of Orange County's top home run hitters last year and has a cannon for an arm.

In other baseball news, Alex Merricks, one of the top lefties in Southern California, transferred from Oxnard to Moorpark. Merricks was a teammate of Simon and Filarey this summer on the Area Code team.
