Adrian Martinez finds himself going down a path that is well known to dominant Clovis (Calif.) Clovis West football players: The national recruiting trail.
The 2018 quarterback, who recently teamed with 2016 teammates Caleb Kelly (Oklahoma), Johnny Rojas III (Fresno State) and Darian Owens (UCLA) last year, has started to see his own recruiting intensify following a stellar sophomore season in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Martinez holds two reported scholarship offers -- from nearby Fresno State and Mountain West rival Nevada -- the latter offering him on March 8.
After following his teammates recruitment, he's basking in his own right now.
“It's an amazing feeling, but also brings pressure. I love it though,” Martinez said.
Last season, Martinez damaged Central Section defenses with his right arm and legs, accumulating 2,574 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns running and throwing for the 6-5 Golden Eagles.
His play immediately caught the attention of Fresno State State head coach Tim DeRuyter, as the Bulldogs became the first program to offer Martinez. Then on March 12, the local prep star got a chance to check out the Fresno State campus through an unofficial visit and enjoyed what he saw.
“I loved my time there,” Martinez said. “I talked to coach [Eric] Kiesau the offensive coordinator and he was a genuine man who I have great respect for. I also met coach DeRuyter and we had a good talk about my future and how he wanted to keep the Valley talent with the Bulldogs. The people involved with the program were great to my father and I. We were greeted with excitement. They made me feel special and a wanted necessity to their program, which is definitely on the rise.”
With Nevada, Martinez said “I talked to coach [Lester] Erb and they really felt my skill set would fit perfectly with their system.” He added that he doesn’t have a planned visit to Reno in the works.
Martinez does have his sights set on hitting some key camps during the offseason. He received an invite to the Nike Opening Regional in Oakland on May 22, which Martinez plans to compete in. He said he’ll attend the Oregon camp in June, as the Ducks have also expressed interest in Martinez through letters. He included that he’s keeping his eyes out on what camps come to his backyard, saying “Depending on what events arise in the Fresno area, I will probably attend those too.”
He’s quickly become the latest gridiron sensation on the corner of Teague and Millbrook Avenues – and has a vision of adding his name to Clovis West lore.

“I am incredibly motivated to surpass all those before me and become one of the greatest to come through Clovis West,” Martinez said.
