PRESEASON ALL-SECTION TEAMS (Part 4)

This fourth installment in a series of profiles and preseason honors teams is for the CIF Central Section. We'll continue this series for the next week, leading up to all of our preseason rankings of the top football teams in the state. Note: We are entering our 25th year of covering high school sports in California.

Central Section

Preseason Honors Squad

Offense

WR -- Jaye Williams (Liberty, Bakersfield) 6-3, 190, Sr.

Has the size, speed and skills to rank among the top 20 college prospects in the West at his position.

WR -- John Taylor (Mt. Whitney, Visalia) 6-1, 175, Sr.

Placed among the state leaders last year in TD catches with 16 for the regular season.

OL -- John Guevara (West, Bakersfield) 6-2, 265, Sr.

Named second team all-area last year by Bakersfield Californian on defense.

OL -- Jacob Hickman (Centennial, Bakersfield) 6-4, 270, Jr.

He was one of the best linemen last year in Kern County -- as a sophomore.

OL -- Nick Howell (Bullard, Fresno) 6-5, 230, Jr.

Promising prospect is the son of a former USC line stalwart and the Trojans reportedly may already be interested.

OL -- Michael Pace (Clovis West, Fresno) 6-3, 247, Sr.

He's the main man up front for the Golden Eagles and is coming off a season in which he improved a lot.

OL -- Adam Hearron (Liberty, Bakersfield) 6-3, 280, Sr.

Returning all-league player.

QB -- Dan Ingle (Foothill, Bakersfield) 6-3, 185, Sr.

Doesn't have the stats of Fresno Hoover junior James Altschuler, but is highly-regarded in the recruiting world.

RB -- LeAndre Matthews (East Bakersfield) 5-8, 180, Sr.

One of the state's top five running backs, Matthews is back after piling up more than 2,000 yards as a junior.

RB -- Brent Webber (Sanger) 6-0, 185, Sr.

Ran for nearly 1,500 yards and 19 TDs during the 2002 regular season.

RB -- Tyrone Bishop (Sunnyside, Fresno) 5-11, 180, Sr.

He's got top sprinter speed in track and returns after going for 1,257 yards and 16 scores a year ago.

Defense

DL -- Corey Actis (Liberty, Bakersfield) 6-5, 255, Sr.

Another reason this squad should duplicate or improve upon last year's 9-3 mark.

DL -- Lawrence Ball (Edison, Fresno) 6-4, 245, Sr.

Gives the Tigers a nice one-two inside punch with Jason Rooters.

DL -- Jason Roberts (Central, Fresno) 6-4, 225, Sr.

One of the West's top pass rush prospects, Roberts has already committed to Fresno State.

DL -- Jason Rooters (Edison, Fresno) 6-5, 280, Sr.

He's one of those guys you see in person (specifically throwing the discus) and he just looks like he'd be a good football player.

LB -- Josh Stephens (West, Bakersfield) 6-1, 215, Sr.

He's probably the section's top two-way player as he'll be doing a lot more on offense as a runner and blocker this season.

LB -- Joey Pfeiffer (Hanford West) 6-2, 225, Sr.

He's listed as a FB/DE, but we're putting him here as an LB because with his size and skills he definitely could be one.

DB -- Bernard Hicks (Edison, Fresno) 5-11, 195, Sr.

Earned second team honors a year ago as a DB from the Fresno Bee.

DB -- Jordan Bucklew (San Joaquin Memorial, Fresno) 6-1, 190, Sr.

Top returning player for team that starts No. 1 in section Sequoia-Sierra Division rankings.

DB -- Alex Guizar (Sanger) 6-1, 185, Sr.

Even though teammate Brent Webber returns with prolific stats, Guizar might be even more dominant for the Apaches as a hard-hitting safety.

DB -- Raymond Mitchell (Hanford West) 5-10, 190, Sr.

Looked good at USC Nike Camp with 4.50 in the 40 and a 33-inch vertical jump.

DB -- Rodney Oliver (Clovis East) 5-10, 175, Sr.

Fastest player for the Huskies figures to get the ball in his hands on special teams and on offense, too.

Multi-Purpose

RB/ATH -- Eric Alfred (South, Bakersfield) 6-0, 210, Sr.

There are some in Bakersfield who think Alfred may have just as bright a future for the next level as LeAndre Matthews.

WR/DB -- Brandon Breazell (Edison, Fresno) 5-10, 160, Sr.

Runs more like a gale-force wind than a breeze, this speedster with a 33-inch vertical reportedly has been offered by USC.

RB/DB -- Marcus Gray (Clovis West, Fresno) 5-11, 205, Sr.

Tested well at the Stanford Nike Camp and beat out teammate Matt Hill (son of Fresno State head coach) for a spot on this list. Hill is a top-notch WR/DB.

RB/ATH -- Francis Ojukwu (Stockdale, Bakersfield) 5-8, 180, Jr.

It's a very good year for RBs in the section and Ojukwu was one of state's top soph RBs in 2002. We just had to include him on this team somewhere.

QB/DB -- Bear Pascoe (Granite Hills, Porterville) 6-1, 175, Sr.

With all he does in other sports as well, Pascoe was one of the Visalia Times-Delta's top five athletes of the year as a junior.

RB/DB -- Jose Rojas (Clovis West, Fresno) 5-8, 185, Sr.

He ran for more than 1,500 yards last season and was another key to his team's advancement to the section final.

RB/KR -- Matt Mason (Bakersfield) 5-10, 175, Sr.

Drillers should do much better than 5-6 this season and Mason is a true game-breaker with 10.68 speed in the 100.
