This series will end with the CIF Southern Section later this week, leading up to all of our preseason rankings of the top football teams in the state. Note: We are entering our 25th year of covering high school sports in California.

Central Coast Section

Preseason Honors Squad

Offense

WR -- Dwight Lowery (Soquel) 6-0, 170, Sr.

Returning All-Santa Cruz County pick scored 10 TDs last year and also plays corner on defense.

TE -- Travis Bell (North Monterey County, Castroville) 6-6, 225, Sr.

One of the top TEs in the West, Bell has already committed to the University of Arizona.

OL -- Chris Danser (Los Gatos) 6-5, 300, Sr.

Massive blocker hopes to do his part to protect team's unbeaten streak, which is now at 38-0-1.

OL -- Eric Schleif (Leigh, San Jose) 6-5, 350, Sr.

Ever see Eric huffing up and down the court in hoops? Pretty nice, actually, for someone so huge.

OL -- James McCluskey (Palo Alto) 6-1, 250, Sr.

Three-year starter was second-team All-CCS last season by the San Jose Mercury-News.

OL -- Evan Dietrich-Smith (Salinas) 6-2, 235, Sr.

All-leaguer from last year had a pretty strong Nike Camp showing and is top returnee from team that figures to be hard-pressed to duplicate 2002 showing.

OL -- Andy Levitre (San Lorenzo Valley, Felton) 6-3, 340, Sr.

SLV's dominance in the Santa Cruz County league may not dissipate and Levitre is one reason why.

QB -- Darren Bragg (Bellarmine, San Jose) 6-1, 180, Sr.

He's not quite in the same class as T.C. Ostrander or Trent Edwards from the last two years, but an excellent blend of skills and one of the top 10 in the state.

RB -- Toke Kefu (San Mateo) 5-10, 185, Sr.

Chiseled slasher piled up 1,752 yards and scored 26 TDs last season.

RB -- Shawn Benjamin (Watsonville) 5-11, 190, Sr.

Ran a 4.4 at the Stanford Nike camp coming off season in which he rushed for 1,300 yards and tallied 29 TDs.

RB -- Ronnie Drummer (North Salinas, Salinas) 5-9, 170, Sr.

Speaking of speed, Mr. Drummer banged out a 4.34 at the Nike camp and placed in both sprint events at the state track meet.

K -- Juan Gamboa (Bellarmine, San Jose) 5-9, 160, Sr.

Made field goals of 55 and 48 yards against St. Francis and was first team All-State Underclass.

Defense

DL -- Jeff Schweiger (Valley Christian, San Jose) 6-4, 240, Sr.

Had 138 tackles and 13 sacks last year, then ran a 4.56 in the 40 at the Nike camp. If Valley Christian repeats as CCS champ and Schweiger puts up similar numbers, already count a vote from us for him to be CCS Player of the Year.

DL -- Travis Martin (St. Francis, Mountain View) 6-4, 225, Sr.

Some think it could be the Lancers' year in the CCS and Martin's pass-rushing is a definite team strength.

DL -- Adam Juratovac (Gunn, Palo Alto) 6-3, 270, Jr.

Adam was his school's sophomore athlete of the year for 2002-03.

DL -- Will Powers (Serra, San Mateo) 6-3, 220, Jr.

What a name for a determined player who seems to have a one-track mind when it comes to crashing opposing team's backfields.

DL -- Keyontre Christian (James Lick, San Jose) 6-3, 245, Sr.

All-league pick from a year ago had 11 sacks and 56 total tackles.

LB -- Will Taufoou (St. Francis, Mountain View) 6-0, 235, Sr.

He was the Mercury-News' Junior of the Year and dominated on both sides of the ball. He rushed for nearly 1,300 yards as a fullback.

LB -- Billy Turner (Riordan, San Francisco) 5-10, 200, Sr.

First team All-WCAL pick from last year also scored eight TDs.

LB -- Langston Johnson (Bellarmine, San Jose) 6-1, 205, Sr.

Has the body right now of a Div. I college player.

DB -- Luke Lippincott (Palma, Salinas) 6-3, 195, Sr.

Luke does it all for the Cheiftains, so there were several positions we could have listed him for. This one worked best.

DB -- Angelo Fobbs-Valentino (Serra, San Mateo) 6-1, 175, Sr.

Blazed to a 4.43 clocking at the Stanford Nike Camp and a standout in track, too.

DB -- Matt Castello (Valley Christian, San Jose) 5-10, 180, Sr.

Returning All-CCS first-teamer had one of the best shuttles (3.99) and had a 33.1-inch vertical leap at the Stanford Nike Camp.

Multi-Purpose

QB/RB -- Drew Shiller (Burlingame) 6-0, 175, Jr.

The All-CCS Soph of the Year is one of those Jeff Garcia-type QBs.

RB/LB -- Ryan Hastie (Palma, Salinas) 5-11, 195, Sr.

Should have terrific season after strong showing at summer college camps.

RB/WR -- Mike Day (Leland, San Jose) 5-7, 165, Sr.

Productive offensive player rushed for 1,300 yards and scored 18 TDs last season.

TE/LB -- Matai Wooden (Overfelt, San Jose) 6-2, 225, Sr.

He's also thrown the discus nearly 165 feet in track.

FB/LB -- Darren Gemoll (Leland, San Jose) 5-10, 200, Sr.

He's more known for baseball, but he did have 81 tackles last year and was an all-leaguer.

WR/DB -- Kevin Jurovich (Valley Christian, San Jose) 6-0, 165, Sr.

He had one of the top shuttles ever clocked at the Stanford Nike Camp (3.90) and ran a 4.56 in the 40.
