PRESEASON ALL-SECTION TEAMS (Part 8)

This eighth installment in a series of profiles and preseason honors teams is for the Orange County area of the CIF Southern Section. This series will end with two additional CIFSS teams plus the overall CIFSS team later this week, leading up to all of our preseason rankings of the top football teams in the state. Note: We are entering our 25th year of covering high school sports in California.

Southern Section (Orange County)

Preseason Honors Squad

Offense

WR -- Jeremy Childs (Los Alamitos) 6-2, 175, Jr.

One of the top sophs in the nation last year started strong with outing vs. Hart.

TE -- Justin Walsh (Laguna Hills) 6-5, 240, Sr.

Another TE from the county to watch is San Clemente's Chris Wilson.v OL -- Mike Tepyer (Pacifica, Garden Grove) 6-5, 280, Sr.

Sleeper prospect is unknown nationally, but could be ready to launch himself with strong first few games.

OL -- Dan Rowlands (Los Alamitos) 6-4, 270, Sr.

We decided to only go with one Los Al lineman here, although no doubt some would say that Daniel Espinoza (6-2, 290) is the equal of the others.

OL -- John Ioane (Tustin) 6-5, 335, Sr.

The Tillers always seems to have one big-time lineman on their team in recent years.

OL -- Leo Talavou (Fountain Valley) 6-4, 300, Sr.

A major mover in the off-season, Talavou is now generally considered one of the top five OL prospects in the West.

OL -- Brandon Nicholas (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) 6-5, 245, Sr.

He'll be a three-year starter and is a returning All-State Underclassmen.

QB -- Daniel Morales (La Habra) 6-1, 175, Sr.

Threw for 2,764 yards and led team to CIFSS divisional title.

RB -- Marquis Malcolm (Tustin) 5-8, 185, Sr.

Probably the top back in a down year for backs in the county with 1,804 yards and 24 TDs from last season. Junior Cortez Rice at Los Al could emerge by the end of the season.

RB -- Cheyne Verhagen (San Clemente) 5-11, 175, Sr.

He'll help keep the Tritons close to Mission Viejo as he returns with 1,600 yards and 16 TDs from a year ago.

RB -- Anthony Matagi (Los Amigos, Fountain Valley) 5-10, 175, Sr.

Scored 21 TDs as a junior and rushed for 1,595 yards.

K -- Doug McAulay (Foothill, Tustin) 5-10, 170, Sr.

Top returning kick scorer in the county with 81 pts from last year, including 10 FGs (one was good from 46 yards out).

Defense

DL -- Jason Bovard (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) 6-3, 245, Sr.

With Bovard and Brandon Nicholas up front, Monarchs' defense could be dominant.

DL -- Dylan Campanale (Servite, Anaheim) 6-3, 250, Sr.

Another Friar defender we almost picked was LB Mike Hernishin.

DL -- Cameron Filkins (Los Alamitos) 6-5, 290, Sr.

Hopes to draw more double-teams this season.

DL -- Matt Rupp (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM) 6-3, 245, Sr.

Three-year starter could be top honors candidate from this program this year.

LB -- Will Price (Western, Anaheim) 6-3, 240, Sr.

Already offered by and has committed to UCLA.

LB -- Jed Collins (Mission Viejo) 6-2, 215, Sr.

We loved him as a soph starter two years ago in CIFSS Div. II title game vs. Chino and he kept on improving last season.

LB -- Anthony Vernaglia (Lutheran, Orange) 6-3, 215, Sr.

He'll be a linebacker at Notre Dame, so we're listing him as such for this team.

DB -- Randy Estes (Los Alamitos) 6-1, 180, Sr.

One of the best DBs ever from Southern California and a top five national prospect.

DB -- Marty Tadman (Mission Viejo) 6-1, 170, Sr.

Defensive captain for the Diablos also adept as QB and WR.

DB -- Xavier Hicks (Fullerton) 6-1, 175, Jr.

Could be one of the top junior DBs in the state.

DB -- Antoine Cason (Los Alamitos) 6-0, 170, Sr.

Quick and effective on the corner, Cason teams with Estes, Daniel Dykes, Jeff Minter and others to form one of nation's top secondaries.

Multi-Purpose

QB/RB -- Jason Forcier (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) 6-0, 195, Jr.

All-State soph from last year runs the option exceptionally well.

WR/LB -- John Ausmus (Lutheran, Orange) 6-1, 200, Sr.

A more productive defender as a prep than Vernaglia, although isn't the same type of nationally-known recruit.

WR/DB -- Steve Heller (Pacifica, Garden Grove) 6-0, 185, Sr.

Picked off three passes in one game last year and had more than 50 catches overall.

QB/RB -- Mark Sanchez (Mission Viejo) 6-3, 190, Jr.

He hasn't done anything yet on the MV varsity, but in the summer lit it up.

QB/RB/DB -- Danny Warden (Brethren Christian, Huntington Beach) 6-0, 200, Sr.

One of the top small school players in the state.
