Andrew Van Buren talks Cal interest, Fresno State offer at The Opening in Los Angeles

TORRANCE, Calif. -- West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade running back Andrew Van Buren updates his recruitment at The Opening Regional in Los Angeles.

TORRANCE, Calif. -- With T.J. Pledger moving on from West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade, Andrew Van Buren has been penciled in to become the lead back for the Eagles in 2017.

Like Pledger -- who transferred to IMG Academy in Florida -- Van Buren has seen the scholarship offers rolling into his household.

The 6-foot, 217-pound 2018 prospect has received eight offers – the last three coming from UCLA, Colorado and Fresno State. The three-star Van Buren, who also helped anchor the secondary at safety last season for Chaminade, has turned into a gym rat and speed guru who trains up to six days a week to prepare for his expanded role at ‘The ‘Nade.’

“I work out with the team and by myself on the weekends. I get myself ready for the upcoming season. I do weight training with the school and then speed on my own,” Van Buren told Scout.

He was one of eight Eagle players who arrived to El Camino College in Torrance on March 12 to compete at The Opening Los Angeles regional.

“It’s always good to compete against the best and see where your skill set is going into the season,” Van Buren said, who turned in a shuttle run time of 4.31 and a vertical jump of 28’6.

His latest offer came on March 15 from the Bulldogs, with new running backs coach Jaime Christian becoming the man at the forefront with trying to lure in Van Buren.

“I believe it's a fantastic school and can't wait to get to know everyone better,” Van Buren said.

Lastly, a possible new offer could be in the works from California, as Van Buren said he’s been in contact with new defensive assistant Tony Tuioti, who coaches outside linebackers.

“He came to the school about a month ago. He’s a good dude,” Van Buren said. “I’ve actually known him since he was at Fresno State Bulldogs. They were quick conversations in the halls before class. Cal is a great school with great academics. I can possibly see myself going there.”

Van Buren’s other offers are from Boise State, Colorado State, San Jose State, Hawaii and Nevada.
