Who's No. 1 in Sacramento?

Vince Mays rushed for 125 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns as Johnson of Sacramento won a local showdown on its home field Saturday, 34-12, over Grant of Sacramento.

Mays, who also blocked an extra point and was outstanding as a safety on defense, scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 20-6 lead. He scored on a one-yard run in the first half.

After an interception by John Gale, the Warriors extended their lead to 27-6 on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Tremayne Kirkland to Leon Davis. Kirkland completed Johnson's scoring with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Grant, which came into the game ranked No. 1 in the metro area by the Sacramento Bee, stayed in the game in the first half on a 24-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Tommie Hall to Nick Hawthorne. The Pacers' only other score was a three-yard plunge in the fourth quarter by Richard Harper.

Johnson is likely to move up to the No. 1 spot in the Bee's rankings this week, but Elk Grove was perhaps even more impressive the night before in its 38-14 win over Nevada Union.

Grant will fall out of next week's state and NorCal rankings. Johnson may be one team one the way up.
