Hercules (Calif.) athlete Emany Johnson talks Utah State offer

Emany Johnson earns his first scholarship offer, with Utah State pegging him as a defensive back.

Hercules (Calif.) athlete Emany Johnson didn't spend Cinco De Mayo partying; he spent it on the phone talking to Utah State safeties coach Kendrick Shaver. Laying off the guacamole was worth it -- it led to Johnson’s first official scholarship offer.

“This moment makes me so happy," said the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder. "I have worked so hard to finally get to where I am at right now. The conversation with the coach was mostly serious with him. There were some laughs with the coach but it was mostly business."

Johnson is leaning toward playing defensive back at the collegiate level. He said a number of things intrigue him about possibly suiting up for the Aggies.

“They’re in the MWC, so it's a decent way from home and I can learn a lot in the Utah area," said Johnson, who owns a 3.7 GPA. "Plus, their football team had won against No. 24 Northern Illinois in 2013 in a bowl game (Poinsettia Bowl against the Huskies). I will have an opportunity to make a name for myself at Utah State."

Outside of the Aggies, Johnson says that Fresno State, San Jose State and New Mexico have chatted with him in the last couple of weeks.
