State Athletes of the Week
Boys: Jordan Christensen
The 6-3, 195-pound quarterback isn't usually mentioned in the same breath as other California hot recruiting targets like Ben Olson (Thousand Oaks), Matt Gutierrez (De La Salle) or Trent Edwards (Los Gatos), but maybe it's time he should be. Christensen can throw on the run and usually has to since Clovis doesn't run much this year and defenses have been coming after him. In a 49-10 victory last week over Stockdale of Bakersfield, Christensen sparkled with 16 completions in 22 attempts for 396 yards and six TDs. His scoring tosses were from 9, 9, 83, 64, 30 and 22 yards out and he had 382 yards in the first half alone. Christensen also scored for the Cougars on a two-yard run. He also is a standout for Clovis in baseball.
Girls: Julie Allen
(Corona del Mar, Newport Beach)The first major duel of the state's girls cross country season took place last Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in the event's Div. III race between Allen and nationally-ranked Jenna Timinsky from San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas. Allen won the 5000-meter race and clocked 18:06, which was by far the best time in any of the four races. The event drew runners from throughout the West, including Oregon and Nevada. Timinsky, in fact, had the second-best time of the day with a mark of 18:17.
